Rocket Monkeys is a Canadian animated television series that was created by Dan Abdo and Jason Patterson and premiered on Teletoon in Canada on January 10, 2013. The series also premiered on Nickelodeon in the United States and internationally on March 4, 2013. It also aired on Disney XD in Southeast Asia, Korean, and Poland.

Plot

The series revolves around two anthropomorphic monkey astronauts named Gus and Wally, who go on wacky and crazy missions and adventures, such as battling Lord Peel and his minions.

Why It Doesn't Deserve To Eat Bananas

  1. Very mediocre, stiff, cheap, and choppy-looking flash animation. It isn't helping that the fact it was animated by Atomic Cartoons, who also animated the horrendous later seasons of Johnny Test (2005).
    • That's such a sad shame because Atomic Cartoons has done some good, such as Atomic Betty.
  2. The art style and character designs are mediocre and ugly, particularly with Gus and Wally.
  3. Boring and plain pathetic plots. For example, in "Welcome to Inky Mart", Gus and Wally run out of ink and must get more, and in "Sidekicked", Gus and Wally rival each other just so they can be a sidekick.
  4. Some episodes are painful, unsettling, or too disturbing to go through.
  5. Overuse of gross-out humor, especially in the later seasons. The episodes "Smell Monkey Smell" and "Robo-Gas" are the worst offenders.
  6. Unnecessary fourth-wall breaks. In the episode "So Sorry", Gus and Wally have to swear (at least censored) to defeat the villain, and when they do, the scene cuts to a rainbow background with the Teletoon logo, bunnies, and flowers, and it happens a second time in the same episode.
    • Also, at the end of "Flipping Out", Yay-OK showed Gus and Wally a lever that when pulled, the episode ends, so they do.
  7. Despite being a villain, Lord Peel can be considered a Butt-Monkey (no pun intended), who always gets abused at the most unnecessary times, even when he doesn't deserve it, the same thing happens to Yay-OK, Nefarious, Gamester X (Myron), etc.
  8. Terrible voice acting, notably Gus and Wally.
  9. Lazy and downright laughable names like Yay-OK, Lord Peel, Nefarious, Inky (not to be confused with a blue-colored enemy from Pac-Man), SLO-MO, King Killya and Deep Space Dave, the occasional superhero of the show.
  10. Some jokes make very little to no sense.
  11. The transitions make no sense at all.
  12. The characters have inconsistent personalities. One moment, Gus is as dumb or even dumber than Wally, and then the next moment, he acts as the brains of the two, and then his personality reverts to being dumb.
    • Speaking of, Gus and Wally are very annoying and incompetent characters. Even the theme song says it all for their stupidity.
      • In fact, they are so irritating, that Yay-OK is aware of this.
    • Moreover on Gus, he is an abusive bully towards his younger brother, Wally. Even though he does apologize for being mean to him by the end of the episode, he goes back to tormenting him in the episodes following the previous ones.
  13. Tons of bad or mediocre episodes are either gross, mean-spirited, torture, or all three, such as:
    • "I Am Not a Banana" (Already, this gave the series a first bad impression.)
    • "Scare-Larious"
    • "Inspection Day"
    • "Bro to Bro"
    • "Trick or Trixie"
    • "When Garbage Revolts"
    • "B.A.L.L"
    • "Space Out!"
    • "Monkey See, Monkey Do Better"
    • "Bro or Joel"
    • "There's No Business Like Monkey Business"
    • "Robot Plague"
    • "May The Best Monkey Win"
    • "My Bully Bot"
    • "Switch Day"
    • "Spacey Cake"
    • "Welcome to Inky Mart"
    • "Rocket Mommy"
    • "Sidekicked"
    • "Wedding Smashers"
    • "Monkey-Itis"
    • "Deep Space Disco"
    • "Hot to Bot"
    • "Smell Monkey Smell"
    • "Monkey's Best Friend"
    • Dude, Where's My Dad?"
    • "The Doctor Is Out" (Doctor Chimpsky torture episode)
    • "Destroy All Bananas"
    • "Three Wild and Crazy Monkeys"
    • "Sharing Is Caring"
    • "Mega Gamgam"
    • "Rock On"
    • "The Tattler"
    • "Bananarchy"
    • "The Boom-Boom Tree" (which was a bad way to end Season 2)
    • "Robo-Gas"
    • "Chez Corny"
    • "Little Monkey Lies"
    • "Zargles"
    • "Take a Picture"
    • "Rimpsky Chimpsky"
    • "Poppin' Ballonskys"
    • "Gus-Gus-Wally"
    • "Walk a Mile in His Peel"
    • "Hive-Five"
    • "The Other Room"
    • "Mom Loves Me More"
    • "Chimpsky-A-Go-Go"
    • "The Yell In Yellow"
    • "Room to Panic"
    • "Try to Ketchup"
    • "Yay-Monkay"
    • "A Very Monkey Christmas Part 1"
    • "General Cluck"
    • "Say It Ain't Bro"
    • "So Sorry"
    • "Nefarious' Slumber Party"
    • "Flipping Out"
    • "Topbot"
    • "Best Frenemies"
    • "Optical Delusion"
    • "Yuk Yuk Yay-OK"
    • "The Last Peel" (which was unsurprisingly a horrible way to end the series due to it ending in a cliffhanger as the monkeys are talking or bragging)
  14. All in all, it's just a forgettable show, which can be compared to other generic bad Canadian cartoons.

Qualities That Deserve To Eat Bananas

  1. The theme song is pretty catchy, adventure-packed, and well-aware about how incompetent the monkeys are, along with their adventures.
    • Some songs are also good.
  2. Yay-OK’s design is cute and decent, and his design is way better than the rest of the character designs.
  3. There are a handful of good episodes such as:
    • "Princess Nefarious"
    • "Ships, Trips, and Wormholes"
    • "The Inventor"
    • "Party Planet"
    • "Going Bananas"
    • "I Am a Banana"
    • "Franken-Banana"
    • "Happy Gus Day"
    • "The Button”
    • "Box Full of Monkeys"
    • "Too Not Cool for School"
    • "A Very Monkey Christmas Part 2".
  4. Some occasional likable characters such as Lord Peel, YAY-OK, Dr. Chimpsky, and SLO-MO.
  5. The plot sounds good on paper but was poorly executed.
  6. The 2008 pilot is better than the final show.
  7. Some transitions are fun to watch, even though they can still be nonsensical.
  8. There are some funny moments here and there.

Reception

Rocket Monkeys currently holds a 3.3 on IMDb and a 3.5 on TV.com. It is considered to be one of the worst Canadian cartoons ever.
