GadgetGang in Outer Space (Portuguese: BugiGangue no Espaço) is a 2017 Brazilian-American-Indian-Hungarian computer-animated sci-fi adventure film directed by Alê McHaddo and produced by 44Toons! and Studio56 with soundtrack composed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra, it was released in February 23 2017 in Brazil and direct-to video in July at the same year in United States. The film is based in the 1996 educational game Gustavinho em o Enigma da Esfinge (Gus in... the Sphinx Enigma).

Plot

When a spaceship crashes to Earth and reveals a group of quirky little space aliens on the run for their lives, the GadgetGang members Gus, Phoebe, Francesco, Mitsue, Mary Ann, Banana, and Tank soon discover this won't be the boring weekend they had dreaded. They learn that in a point far from the galaxy, an evil warlord named Gana Golber has seized control of the Confederation of Planets and now all of the planets are in danger--including Earth.

Why It Sucks

  1. To get the elephant out of the room, the director Alê McHaddo is infamous for having a terrible history working with animation, having previously been responsible for directing infamous productions such as the Vídeo Brinquedo films and also being the creator of Osmar the First Slice of the Loaf and Newbie and the Disasternauts.
  2. The concept itself is completely unoriginal and poorly executed, being basically a typical story of humans saving the universe from aliens.
  3. The entire movie itself it's just massive tons of pop culture references at a point that his young audience didn't even recognize as they even use licensed characters like Master Yoda and E.T.
  4. Almost all the characters are stereotypical, forgettable, charmless or with little or no personality.
    • Gustavinho (Gus) is the fearless leader.
    • Bola (Tank) is the fat guy who only cares about food.
    • Mitsue is an offensive racial stereotype that Japanese are blind.
    • Francesco is the nerd.
    • Fefa (Phoebe) is the annoying young sister.
    • Mariana (Mary Ann) is the mean popular girl.
    • Gana Golber, the main antagonist of the film, is a incredibly generic antagonist, since his whole character is just "I'm going to destroy the universe because I'm evil!".
    • Banana is the coward guy who is scared of everything.
  5. Unconvincing and rather cheap-looking CGI animation that looks like something out of a late Xbox 360 game cutscene, as it also suffers from some several rendering errors. Sure that CGI is something recent in Brazil, but Lino came out at the same year and has the quality of Pixar movie, as it also suffers from some several rendering errors.
  6. The character designs (while not too bad) can look uncanny due to their head shapes and exaggerated eye sizes like Mitsue, Phoebe and Banana for exemple. As this also can goes to Tank who looks more like an middle-age man rather than a child.
  7. The final battle between some of the GadgetGang members and Gana's robots is very anti-climatic, due the fact that it got ruined by more pop culture references and of course to add the salt on the wound, the robot's weapons are just slime which is just disgusting too look at.
  8. This movie will lead you to ask so many questions such as:
    • Where's the parents of the GadgetGang members? and how did they let their children to travel alone in space alongside a group of aliens?
    • How did they discovered that Gana Golber is actually a worm in a robotic suit?
    • Why the spaceships are filled with slime?
    • What planet did the Invas came from?
  9. Laughably bad dialogue like Tank saying "A flying saucer?, oh okay i'm the lead singer from Iron Metal!".
  10. Awful English dub with many of the voices sound unfitting and forced for some characters.
    • In other words, the voice for The Invas are pretty frustrating the listen to, due to them having extremely high-pitched voices.
  11. Immature attempts to humor, like one of the characters farting inside of a inflatable suit.
  12. Shameless product placement for Rei Do Mate (a very well-known fast-food chain in Brazil skilled in tea house stores) during in one of the scenes where Gregory is piloting the Roswell from 51 spaceship.
  13. False Advertising: In the Australian DVD cover art, only the aliens are seen on the cover, and none of the human characters appear on it.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Beautiful soundtrack compsed by the Budapest Symphony Orchestra.
  2. The original Brazilian Portuguese dub is much better than the English one, since there's a lot of renowned famous actors there like Danilo, Gentili, Maísa Silva and the legendary voice actor Guilherme Briggs.
  3. The design for the several characters are also decent, specially with the aliens.
  4. The designs for the spaceships are very well-crafted.
  5. There's some likable characters like The Invas, Roswell from 51, Governor Mennis, Hür, King Iva and Ambassadress Inva.
    • Despise being a generic antagonist, Gana Golber is kinda of threatening.
