Get Blake! (titled Blake and the Aliens during development) is a French/American animated television series. The series is produced by the French animation company Marathon Media (known for their work on Totally Spies!) for Gulli and the global network Nickelodeon. The show first premiered on March 2, 2015, on Nicktoons in the United Kingdom and Ireland. It premiered on Nickelodeon in France on April 13 and debuted on Gulli in late 2015.

Plot

The series tracks the exploits of Blake Myers, an adventurous boy who is destined to one day become a space ranger who protects humanity from alien squirrels called "Squaliens". The Squaliens, however, are sent back in time to prevent him from fulfilling this destiny.

Get Bad Qualities

  1. Terrible and annoying voice acting, especially from Robbie Daymond as Blake Myers.
  2. The main characters, Blake and Mitch, can be very annoying at times.
  3. Weird and nonsensical plot. How does Blake even become a space ranger?
  4. Pathetic antagonists. Their names are Squaliens, which are downright laughable for a villain.
  5. Mediocre designs for most of the characters that look like they were stolen from Butch Hartman's The Fairly OddParents and Todd Kauffman and Joey So's Sidekick. Additionally, they are unfitting in a show created by Marathon Media, as they fit more into a Canadian cartoon instead.
  6. Most of the episodes can get boring quickly.
  7. The animation, while smooth, never really goes above average. There are instances where it is stiff and there are several animation errors present.
  8. Poor lip syncing (mainly due to the characters' mouths still read in French in the English dub; similar what happens with Gadget Boy; another French animated show produced by DiC).
  9. It's a poor clone of Kid vs. Kat, right down to the "kid vs. alien animal" theme and art style.
  10. Similar to Mysticons, the airing schedule in the U.S was slightly (but not terribly) weird.
  11. The Squaliens yell "Get Blake!" a lot, which can get very annoying.
  12. The Squaliens are like rip-offs of the Cockroaches from Oggy and the Cockroaches, right down to the design and personalities.
  13. Stupid ending in "Get Zombies!", where Blake states "Gamers get rid of their consoles after they finish their games", which is nonsensical and false. Then he and Mitch tie their console into a big firework and make it explode.
  14. All of the episode titles (except for the final episode) start with "Get", and then another word, which is very uncreative and repetitive at the same time.
  15. It sometimes uses cringe-worthy and 1960s-esque sound effects, which are unfitting for the series' tone.
  16. The series ended off on a cliffhanger without any continuation at all: In the final episode, once Blake sends the Squaliens back to space, Leonard manages to escape and stay on earth to capture him all by himself as he follows Blake back to his house, but the series ends right here, as Nick barely advertised the series and seemed content to let it die.

Get Good Qualities

  1. Blake's design is passable.
  2. Some of the jokes are decent.
  3. Decent soundtrack, including the theme song.
  4. Blake and Mitch aren't annoying all the time.
  5. Relatable main characters.
  6. A few good episodes.
  7. The animation looks decent even if it's stiff and has some animation mistakes.

Reception

Get Blake! received mixed reviews from critics. It currently sits at a 5.6/10 on IMDb and it's considered to be one of the weakest (but not the worst) Nickelodeon cartoons of all time.

Trivia

  • This is the only cartoon from Marathon Media that has an art style being completely different from the other shows they created.
