Plot

SpongeBob and Patrick's game of hiding and seek goes downhill after SpongeBob can't find Patrick anywhere.

Qualities That Were Hidden and Never Found

  1. This episode has some of the laziest writing in the whole series. At least "You Don't Know Sponge" has a plot, while this episode suffers from having a very, VERY bare plot as well as for dragging on some scenes for too long, making the entire episode filler. Mostly, it just has SpongeBob looking for Patrick when they're playing hide and seek.
  2. Bad attempts at humor:
    • The beginning where SpongeBob tries to explain how to play hide and seek to Patrick really drags on so long, and it's really not funny.
      • Even though SpongeBob has explained how to play hide and seek to him, Patrick still doesn't remember what it is, and he asks it again, again, and again, which implies that he's forgetful in this episode.
    • At the end when SpongeBob says Patrick was under there the whole time, and Patrick responds, “Under where?”. Is that supposed to be an adult joke or not?
  3. Just like in "You Don't Know Sponge", we know Patrick isn't smart, but this episode takes his stupidity up to eleven and it is annoying when Patrick keeps on forgetting what hide and seek is despite SpongeBob already teaching him how to play and acknowledging that they played it before.
    • Even worse, in the first 7 seconds of the episode, Patrick can’t even remember SpongeBob's name. SpongeBob, his best friend he had known since he was a baby.
  4. Making the whole episode is completely pointless. There's one scene that reveals Patrick hides under his rock the whole time, so you can just skip the rest of the episode after this scene.
  5. Two annoying and unfunny scenes:
    • SpongeBob yells Squidward's name and runs up to him, indirectly causing Squidward's key snapped on the door.
      • He is annoying for yelling Squidward's name and running up to him and indirectly causing him to get locked out of his house.
    • SpongeBob asks, "Are you sure?" to Mrs. Puff over and over again if she wants to play hide and seek with him while SpongeBob makes an obnoxious expression. This scene rips off the doorbell gag in "Pet or Pests" as well.
  6. The episode tries to do a fake-out showing that that isn’t Patrick at the café (because they revealed that Patrick was in his house the whole time) and someone who looks like Patrick and even his name "Patrick Not-Star" is uncreative, though funny.
    • In fact, Patrick Not-Star's design is a bit creepy.
  7. Out of nowhere moral that has nothing to do with the episode’s plot (which is non-existent), about that it’s okay to lose a game as long as you had fun playing. It's not necessarily a bad moral and it's a good moral, but it wasn't even the right moral for the episode.

Qualities That Have Been Found

  1. There are some funny moments here and there, such as:
    • In the opening, after SpongeBob and Patrick greet each other, they silently stare at each other smiling for about thirty seconds, blinking occasionally.
    • "Welcome to the end of the world... cafe and gift shop."
    • Patrick Not-Star scene
  2. SpongeBob can be pretty tolerable, even with the BQs.
    • Patrick was tolerable, unlike most episodes centered on him where he is portrayed as unlikable. Although, the only exception from him is how he constantly forgets what playing hide and seek is.
  3. The scene where SpongeBob takes Sandy's submarine to search for Patrick was engaging, mostly due to the song that played during it.
  4. While out of nowhere and had nothing to do with the plot of the episode (which is non-existent), it does have a good moral that it’s okay to lose a game as long as you had fun playing.

Trivia

  • This episode was paired with "You Don't Know Sponge" on the same day that both episodes aired.
  • It spawned the "Patrick Not-Star" meme.
  • During the theme song, this is the first episode to adapt to using the new Nickelodeon logo which is seen with the show's logo. This would be used up until "Sold!".
    • In addition, starting with this episode, the old Nickelodeon logo is no longer used for non-USA airings, and instead uses the new Nickelodeon logo, even on USA airings.
