Horrid Henry's Horrid Adventure is a game released for the Nintendo DS in 2010. It is a 2D action platformer with 36 levels.

Story

Margaret has stolen all of Henry's stuff. It's up to you to travel through 3 lands to get it all back! The DS game features the song Alara - Pixelated Boy.

Why It's a Horrid Adventure

  1. First off, the controls are abysmal and clunky, even for a Horrid Henry game. Even Missions of Mischief has better controls than this game, despite that game also having poor controls.
    • This is also one of the main reasons why this game is so terrible and not fun, as it completely ruined the game, even though it might have been average if it had just been improved.
    • The jump is, without doubt, the worst part of the awful controls, as it's extremely clunky and you almost can't control your jump, much like the Castlevania games on NES, except that for these games, it's designed with it, so it was not a major problem, but here, the controls are just not designed for the level design.
    • It can also cause a lot of cheap deaths, as you can easily die by enemies due to a bad jump that you have done or even if it doesn't respond well.
    • The controls are also really unresponsive, especially the jump, and this is what can cause cheap deaths; the only times that you will die will be because of that.
    • They are also extremely slippery to the point that you will fall from a platform a lot of times, even when you are on the ground. Henry is very slippery; combine this with the clunky and unresponsive controls, and you get an almost unplayable game that is just a waste of time. Even Henry would tell the player not to play this game.
  2. The story is very generic and bland; it's just Henry that has to catch Margaret for getting his toys back, and if he doesn't, Margaret will be the leader of the Purple Hand Gang.
  3. The swimming controls are absolutely abysmal and horribly clunky, with them being extremely stiff and even more unresponsive than the main controls of Henry, and if you touch an enemy, your bubble will be destroyed, and you can't swim after that; in fact, it's so bad that it's almost on par with Fantasia on the Sega Genesis, which also have horrible swim controls.
  4. The boss fights are very generic and extremely bland to the point that they give the boss fights from both the DS version of Crash Mind over Mutant and Pac-Man World 3 a run for their money. They're so generic and easy that if you remove them, it won't change anything.
    • The first boss fight is very easy since it's a robot where you need to disable all of its green buttons to turn them red and shoot Margaret, and that's it.
    • The second boss fight, which is Margaret herself, is a bit challenging, but it's not enough to be good, as if you learned the paths of Margaret, then you would have no problem beating her, not to mention that you must get the ballons weapons to make this fight easier.
    • The third and final boss is again Margaret, but she's even blander than her other bosses, as you need to destroy her boat, and it's extremely easy if you know what you do.
  5. The soundtrack is again repetitive and bland, as there's only 4 songs in the entire game, and they are not that catchy and are very forgettable fast.
    • Evil Empire, while the second-best song from the game, is somewhat repetitive and bland, not to mention that it's quite generic, much like some of the Horrid Henry games.
    • Lovely Land, while good and the best song of the game, is pretty repetitive and somewhat generic too.
    • Purple Hand Land is pretty bad and is definitely the worst song of the game, as it's very bland and repetitive, not to mention that it's a bit annoying.
  6. Terrible level design with platforms that are badly placed and also some water areas that are very badly placed—it's so bad that it's also one of the reasons why this game is so bad, not to mention that the game is very easy even with the terrible level design.
  7. As said in WIAHA#5, the game is barely challenging as the enemies are dumb to the point of not even trying to kill you. You can also easily avoid them, and you will never have any problems with death; in fact, you can easily beat the game without even dying. Even most of the Kirby games are more challenging than this one.
  8. The game is very short, lasting only 1 hour, and there's little to no content after that other than a few unlocked mini games, which is quite unacceptable for a 2010 DS game, as even some SNES platformer games and the previous Horrid Henry game, Horrid Henry: Missions of Mischief, are longer than this.
    • In fact, the game is even shorter if you want to speedrun it, and you can beat it in less than an hour.
  9. Extremely terrible graphics that are even worse than Missions of Mischief, as here it's very pixelated and much like Ben 10 Alien Force: The Rise of Hex, Henry doesn't even have a face. Even some GBA games are more detailed than this.
    • The sprite work is also very terrible, with Henry and especially Margaret being the worst offenders.
    • The colors are also garbage to look at, and it makes the graphics look even worse.
    • The cel shading also doesn't help either, as it doesn't make the game look better and instead makes it look worse. Even games such as Super Mario 64 DS, Sonic Rush, Garfield's Nightmare, Lego Star Wars 2 on DS, Pac-Man World 3, Kirby Super Star Ultra, and Naruto: Ninja Destiny all look better than this.
  10. Buying all the weapons in the world is basically impossible, as it's very expensive and you need to get a lot of Yoyos to buy them. The bubble weapon, for example, cost 300 Yoyos in the first world. This means that you might possibly only be able to buy one weapon per world, not to mention that they aren't kept for the new world that you encounter.
  11. Much like most Horrid Henry games, the ending is terrible, and the sad part is that it's actually the best ending that a Horrid Henry game would ever give. The reason it's terrible is because it's just dialogue, and it also feels like it's ending on a cliffhanger.
  12. Dreadful enemy placements that make Sonic Advance 3 enemy placements a masterpiece; they are so badly placed that it's one of the few reasons why you will die from them, not to mention that they barely move most of the time.
  13. Much like the first Shrek game, Mr. Bean on PS2 and DS, you can't kill enemies, and instead, you can only stun them. This makes some levels a massive chore since, as said before, the enemy placements are horrible.
  14. If you get hit when you get a power up, you will automatically lose them. This is made even worse due to the horrible enemy placements, and you will lose them very quickly, especially if it's the power up that makes you jump higher.
  15. While there are 36 levels in the game, they are extremely short, and most of them can be completed in only 1 minute or even less, sometimes 30 seconds.
  16. The death animation is very laughable and almost cringe-worthy.
  17. The level environments are very out of place for a Horrid Henry game, such as the sewer world, the lovely land (which has nothing to do with the series), and Purple Hand World, which is not as out of place as the first two, but it's not that fitting.
  18. The weapons suck and are pretty bad.
    • The slime is pretty much the best, but angling that weapon is poor, and you can't angle it down. Despite that, the weapon is not really bad, but still.
    • The second one, which is a balloon, is a nightmare to angle, and it's also a nightmare to angle it to an enemy, and it's even worse than the first one.
    • The third one, which is a bubble, is without a doubt the worst weapon of the entire game since it can't stun some enemies and it's extremely slow to use, not to mention that it's the weapon where you can go underwater, making this much worse.
  19. Due to being too easy, the game is extremely boring for a lot of levels, especially the last one.
  20. If you want to 100% all the levels, you must have the bubble weapon in all the worlds. Due to some of the Yoyos in some levels being in water, this is much worse when the weapons are extremely expensive to buy, and sometimes you nearly have to 100% all the levels to get some of the yoyos, thanks to how badly designed this game is.
  21. The hit detection is atrocious, sometimes Henry will get a hit even if he has no contact with an enemy, or when you shoot some of them, they will not even be stunned, again showing how badly programmed and designed this game is.
  22. The wall jump is horribly broken, with it being very unresponsive and awkward to use, but at the same time, it's making you get to some of the platforms that aren't supposed to be landing with the wall jump, but you can still do it. This proves how much the level design of the game is not only very bad but also broken.
  23. Awful map design for all of the worlds, as it is somehow very poorly drawn for the map, despite the art style of the animated series being great; the second one is the best but still somewhat terrible, and the third one looks downright terrible.
  24. No voice acting, not even some small voice clips; this shows how much of a rushed game it is.
  25. It somewhat rips offs some of the good 2D platformers, and even some other obscure games; it's even rip-off some of the elements of some animated shows; this includes, but is not limited to:
    • The two screens that show the levels are a blatant rip-off of Sonic Rush; as in that game, there is also this system, but it's been executed much better than this game.
    • Lovely Land looks like it's been ripped from Kirby, or even the Kirby anime itself, which shows that this game was possibly intended to be an asset flip. The candy itself looks like it was ripped from a health item from Kirby Super Star.
      • The level design is somewhat a rip-off of Kirby too, only just worst and not even fun nor designed greatly.
    • The death animation of both Henry and Margaret looks like it's been ripped from a WarioWare game, mostly WarioWare: Get It Together.
    • Most of the weapons also go as far as ripping off some weapons from Doraemon 3: Nobita no Machi SOS! on Nintendo 64, only in 2D and much worse than that said game.
    • Some of the enemies look like they are (or were ripped off) straight from a Bomberman game.
    • Henry's running animation looks like it's been ripped off from both Bomberman Hero and Doraemon: Nobita to Fukkatsu no Hoshi, only much more laughable than these two games, where their running animation was decent.
    • Purple Hand Land looks like it's been ripped straight from The Legend of Zelda game, mostly the DS duology and Wind Waker, and also looks like it's been ripped from One Piece.
    • In some ways, although not as much as Horrid Henry: The Good, The Bad, and the Bugly, the game plays a bit like a watered-down version of Klonoa, but it's even worse than the said Horrid Henry game.
    • The soundtrack even sounds like it comes from Garfield's Nightmare sometimes, although it's not really noticeable, and it isn't the most notable asset flip of this game.
    • Sometimes, the levels even feel like they were taken from Crash Bandicoot: The Huge Adventure, only they have made these levels worse than that game.
    • The climbing elements almost feel like they're straight-up ripped off from both DK: King of Swing and DK: Jungle Climber, at least the design of them.
    • The "short levels" idea is also stolen from Yo! Noid on NES, except that in that game, it wasn't badly executed, but here it is and is just a poor idea in general, although this might be a good thing considering how bad the levels are.
    • The wall jump also look like it was ripped from both Mega Man X and Super Metroid, although it's not really noticeable and is the less notable asset flip of the game.
  26. Due to how out of place the worlds that you play through are, the game is unfaithful to the Horrid Henry game, especially the TV show that is based on it.
  27. Awful cutscenes that are just images with zero voice acting.
  28. Due to all of these problems, this game is one of, if not, the worst Horrid Henry game ever made and even one of the worst DS games of all time, and also a blatant cash grab and shovelware, as there's hardly any fun and/or redeeming qualities. The levels being designed in like two minutes, the awful controls and graphics, and the list goes on.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. At least this game is a little more faithful than Horrid Henry: The Good, The Bad, and the Bugly, which was also quite unfaithful to the animated series too.

Reception

While the game hasn't received a lot of reviews, it's actually gotten negative reviews from critics; for example, Nintendo Gamer gave it 40%.[1][2]

The game also currently has a score of 1.79 on Gamefaq based on 14 users, making it the lowest-rated game of the franchise on the website.[3]

Not that much information about the game is known, but due to how obscure it is, it's probably a commercial failure.[4]
