The Leapster, marketed as the Leapster Learning Game System, is a handheld edutainment console released by LeapFrog in 2003 and discontinued in 2014.
Why It Flopped
- The design of the console is just a poorly made Game Boy Advance. The original version in particular has some of the ugliest console designs.
- It's games such as Sonic X and Math Baseball are pretty boring.
- The audio and visual quality are abysmal, it could give the Game.com a run for its’ money.
- Speaking of the visual quality, when these games are played on a Leapster TV, the visual quality is worse.
- The Leapster cartridges of Letter Factory and Talking Words Factory don't even qualify as games; they are rather just like those FMV games from the 90s with barely any interactivity.
- It has bad battery life. While it could last 6 to 11 hours, charging it lasts up to 3-4 days depending on usage, which is a very long time.
- Many of the games aren't that challenging.
- Because of how easy the games are, they are also very short.
- The sound effect that plays when you get an answer wrong is very abysmal.
- Some of the games only result in the console turning itself off once the game's over.
- It doesn't use rechargeable batteries, unless you use a battery pack. The Leapster 2, however, has one.
The Only Redeeming Quality
- To be fair, it did have some good games such as Letterpillar, SpongeBob SquarePants: Through the Wormhole, Get Puzzled and Kindergarten.
Trivia
- The Ficreation Discord Server by GabrielGarciaDiscord is trying to start meme spread for the console. It also has its own meme server for Leapster memes.
- Its games run on Flash, meaning it's theoretically possible to emulate the games on a computer.
