The Leapster Learning Game System (previously known as the Leapster Multimedia Learning System) is an educational handheld game console aimed at 4- to 10–11-year-olds (preschool to fourth grade or fifth grade), made by LeapFrog Enterprises. Its games teach the alphabet, phonics, basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division), and art and animal facts to players. Along with a directional pad, the system features a touchscreen with a stylus pen that enables young users to interact directly with the screen. The Leapster was released in October 2003 and discontinued in 2014.

Why It Flopped and Leaped to Its End

  1. The design of the console is just a poorly made Game Boy Advance. The original version in particular has some of the ugliest console designs.
  2. It's games such as Sonic X and Math Baseball are pretty boring.
  3. The audio and visual quality are abysmal, it could give the Game.com a run for its’ money.
    • Speaking of the visual quality, when these games are played on a Leapster TV, the visual quality is worse.
  4. The Leapster cartridges of Letter Factory and Talking Words Factory don't even qualify as games; they are rather just like those FMV games from the 90s with barely any interactivity.
  5. It has bad battery life. While it could last 6 to 11 hours, charging it lasts up to 3-4 days depending on usage, which is a very long time.
  6. Many of the games aren't that challenging.
  7. Because of how easy the games are, they are also very short.
  8. The sound effect that plays when you get an answer wrong is very abysmal.
  9. Some of the games only result in the console turning itself off once the game's over.
  10. It doesn't use rechargeable batteries, unless you use a battery pack. The Leapster 2, however, has one.

The Only Redeeming Quality

  1. To be fair, it did have some good games such as Letterpillar, SpongeBob SquarePants: Through the Wormhole, Get Puzzled and Kindergarten.
