Legends of Chamberlain Heights is a 2016 adult animated sitcom that aired on Wednesday nights during Season 1 right after South Park on Comedy Central. It later aired on Sundays during Season 2 right after Kevin Hart Presents: The Next Level. The series finale, "Legends of Lock-up", aired on August 20th, 2017, and the show was cancelled after that.

Plot

The series is about three high school freshmen who are willing to become basketball stars.

Why It's Not a Legend

  1. Horrible and incredibly stilted animation that's trying way too hard to be like South Park but fails. Heck, even MTV’s Good Vibes had better-looking animation than this show.
  2. It is so stereotypical and racist, it practically puts The Nutshack to shame with how racist it can get.
    • The show is filled to the brim with African American stereotypes. A constant stream of criminal and drug references happen throughout the series.
    • Even if it is used as a way to say "buddy", or "friend", the show uses the N-word nonstop.
    • Grover is incredibly bland; it feels like he is just there to stereotype African American teenagers as he has little to no personality.
    • Jamal only cares about food and sex more than anything important in his life, also having a tendency to fake homosexuality for fun.
    • Milk is basically a walking stereotype of Caucasian boys who are into African American culture.
  3. They also make fun of disabled people in a very distasteful way:
    • In "Cane and Disabled", the trio pretended to be disabled just to get better seats at the game. On the bright side, they at least get their comeuppance after Special Ted threatens to beat them up.
    • The disabled character, Special Ted, uses his status as being handicapped as a reason to terrorize the school and bully anyone who pisses him off, even the teachers. He also accuses anyone who tries to back down from fighting him of ableism.
    • Jank-Eye Jarvis, a diabetic student with an enlarged eye gets bullied even worse than the main characters, as if being diabetic is worse than death.
    • Dyslexic Donny, who wears his underpants outside of his pants, is the worst offender when it comes to stereotypes of disabled people. The nickname he is given only adds salt to the wound because dyslexia is associated with reading, not clothing.
  4. As if the stereotypes about African Americans and disabled people weren't enough, it also stereotypes the LGBTQ+ community.
    • In "Hom-coming", the trio tries to get a gay student named Andre impress girls with his "progressiveness".
    • Randy, a homosexual stereotype was paired up with a prison rapist, Ledante, as part of the school's "egg baby" project.
    • The entire plot of "Legends of Lock-Up" revolves around the gang ending up in prison, with Jamal pretending to be gay to avoid this, implying that if you're actually interested in gay sex, the other prisoners will leave you alone.
  5. Overuse of vulgar jokes ranging from sex, drugs, crime, bullying, and general thuggish and gangster-like behavior, that even crosses the line for an adult show on Comedy Central.
    • Keep in mind that the show revolves around a high school setting and the main characters are teenagers.
      • There's also a mention of underage drug use with Grover's younger brother, Mali, sells drugs at just eight years old!
    • One scene in particular involves the many people who were suffering extremely disgusting side effects from the party drug, "Jamallies," created by the trio in the series premiere.
    • The episode "Confederate Flags of Our Fathers", has a bestiality joke, where Milk gets raped by a bear. We kid you not.
  6. Grover and Jamal use the N-word as if it's about to get outlawed, yet when Milk tries to say the slur, he gets slapped for it.
  7. Like another series that aired on Comedy Central two years prior, the outlines aren't solid, but rather messy.
  8. Awful voice acting. The voices sound very unfitting for most of the characters, especially Jamal.
  9. Horrid and ugly character designs.
    • The characters have big lips that look like they were stung by a million bees, which served as a very controversial trait against African Americans for decades.
  10. During their first season, the show tries so hard to be like South Park and coincidentally, aired on Wednesday nights, right after it.
  11. It had a decent concept that was wasted on bland characters, abuse of vulgar humor, and ugly animation.

Legend Qualities

  1. Good theme song.
  2. "Legends of Lock-up", was a pretty decent finale.
  3. As mentioned above, the series' concept was decent but was unfortunately executed poorly due the faults mentioned above.

Reception

It has a score of 4.9/10 on IMDb and a 40% critic score, It has a positive reception on Google as it holds an 84% and a 42% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

Trivia

  • The episode "End of Days", which featured Kobe Bryant's helicopter crashing, was censored to remove said scene after Kobe's death in January 2020.
