Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie is a game released on the Game Boy and developed by Bandai.

Gameplay

The Game Boy version is a single-player side-scrolling action game similar to the SNES version. The player can choose to play as any of the six rangers, who will start off each stage as a Ninja Ranger. Rocky, Billy, and Tommy are the stronger characters, while Adam, Kimberly, and Aisha are more agile. By defeating enemies throughout each stage, mainly Putty Patrols, and accumulating enough Thunderbolt items to fill up the power gauge, the player can transform their character into a Power Ranger. Filling up the power gauge again while in Power Ranger mode will allow the player to perform a super attack. The game consists of six stages. The first five stages can be played in any order, while the sixth one can only be played after completing the other five.

Plot

Obviously, you have to defeat some bosses including Ivan Ooze, Rita Repulsa, Lord Zedd, Goldar, etc, and you have to defeat all of them. Pretty much.

Why It Still Doesn't Morph

  1. The punches and kicks are done in alternating order. It’s a kick, then a punch, then a kick, etc. This leads to some other problems later in the game.
  2. The controls, while better than the previous games, are still pretty bad since they are quite clunky and sluggish, and sometime they are unresponsive, such as when you are on the minecart and you need to jump, but due to the minecart being a moving platform, your rangers doesn't jump well and had a slight delay, and because of this, you will get cheap deaths.
  3. The punch-kick problem is really problematic at the sand stage, you have to punch/kick all of the sand as quickly as possible, especially that there's a machine following behind you fast and kill you instantly. The best way to do it is duck-stand-stand duck-duck-stand while saying it out loud.
  4. For some reason, the box art uses the TV show suit of the White Ranger instead of the movie suit.
  5. Unless you play the game on a Super Game Boy, all of the Rangers look dark green because the Game Boy's screen is colorless.
  6. The soundtrack isn't bad but it is repetitive and some of the musics are ear bleeding, and are worse than those of the first Game Boy game (which by the way, wasn't a good game either).
  7. Horrible bosses, most of them are horribly hard but for terrible reasons, since it isn't because of them being designed for be challenging but are designed to be as hard as possible, not helping the awful combat system, they are so bad that it make those of Power Rangers Wild Force on GBA feel like they are great bosses in comparison.
  8. While you can play as all six Rangers, all of them play the same.
  9. The level design is even worse than in the first Game Boy game, since here they are designed to be extremely frustrating, and the enemies as well as the platforms placements are horrible and way worst here, in fact the level design is so bad that it make this game possibly one of the hardest Power Rangers game, and not for a good reason.
  10. The sand level is easily the absolute worst stage of the entire game, since there's a place where you need to quickly destroy sand to pass and not getting killed by the machine that by the way kill you in only one hit, not helping the horrible combat system and the awful controls that are pretty much unresponsive.
  11. Bad hit detection, enemies from far away can still throw a projectile that isn't close to you resulting in damage.
  12. This game is infamous for how horrible the difficulty spike of the game is, since there's so many frustrating moments, such as the aforementioned sand stage, or other that are so hard that they made this game possibly even harder than it's SNES game counterpart, which was challenging but in a good way.
    • One of the most frustrating moments was in the minecart level where you cannot fall or if so you die, and in that stage it make absolutely no senses because the ground is only at 2m, which isn't even high of a fall, it is also similar to what was seen in Dark Castle for the Sega Genesis.
      • You also have to perfectly jump to the next cart because if you either jump too late, jump too soon, or let the carts touch, you die, which make it even more frustrating and tedious.
  13. Since it follows the 1995 movie, they got Aisha's skin color wrong, making her look too much like Trini.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Awesome Super Game Boy background that is one of the best of the entire library, the colors are also very good looking on this game.
  2. The soundtrack is pretty good, especially the title theme that had a really good rendition of the show theme song.
  3. Great graphics that are very detailled for a Game Boy game, but then again, if not played on Super Game Boy, you can't know what ranger you play as because they all look the same.
    • The Super Game Boy support is also one of the best as said in RQ#1, because not only there is that awesome background but also add colors that are even better than in the previous Power Rangers Game Boy game.
