Princess Buttercup is the second episode in the first season of The Powerpuff Girls (2016).

Plot

When Buttercup starts hanging with the Derbytantes, Princess Morbucks wishes to join the Powerpuff Girls. Unfortunately, Princess betrays the girls by giving them a chest that lets out an indestructible "necronium" diamond heart that traps them inside, and it's up to Buttercup and the Derbytantes to save them and stop Princess Morbucks.

Royal Qualities

  1. Although very brief, we get to see the narrator say something at the start, which is "ah, lunchtime at the school cafeteria", and again at the end when he said that the day was saved thanks to the Powerpuff Girls.
  2. The Derbytantes' designs look pretty decent along with their hangout, and them doing pottery on another person's head while skating is pretty impressive, along with Princess Morbucks lifting a limo.
  3. Even though it's only the second episode, the girls actually do crime-fighting here by attacking Princess Morbucks' robot with pieces of the diamond Morbucks trapped Blossom and Bubbles in, and before that Buttercup herself when she attacked the Derbytantes and trying to attack Morbucks' robot on her own.
  4. Morbucks' robot design looks pretty cool and matches her color style, along with her in the Powerpuff Girls suit. The way she defeats the monster is also impressive and barely took any effort, as she shows him that his app update is complete and that somehow made him fall to the ground.
  5. Some emotional moments, such as Buttercup thinking for one moment that the Derbytantes aren't their friends with her having tears for a few seconds and then she says that Blossom and Bubbles need her, and Bubbles having happy tears while trapped in the diamond when seeing Buttercup again.
  6. Although the Derbytantes were working for Princess Morbucks, they said that Buttercup earned their respect, and so, they freed Blossom and Bubbles from the diamond Morbucks trapped them in.
  7. Good ending: The girls attack Princess Morbucks' robot suit by using pieces of the diamond Morbucks trapped Blossom and Bubbles in, and then Bubbles says that she thought Buttercup was gone forever and Buttercup apologizes for hanging out with the Derbytantes and forgot who her real friends are, and Blossom and Bubbles apologize for replacing her with Princess Morbucks. And it ends with the narrator saying that the day was saved thanks to the Powerpuff Girls, and Bubbles throws a death ball at the screen.

Qualities That Are Not Royal

  1. Buttercup was somewhat wrong for hanging out with the Derbytantes instead of Blossom and Bubbles.
  2. The only dated meme reference was the time card, which said "L8R" rather than just "later". On top of that, the time card background looks pretty lazy as it's just a notebook background with a bunch of stickers.

Reception

  • It holds a mixed rating of 5.2/10 on IMDB.

Trivia

  • "Derbytantes" is a poem for the words "derby" and "debutante".
  • The episode title is likely inspired by the main character and heroine from the book and movie, The Princess Bride.
