Marvel's Spider-Man (also known as simply Spider-Man) is an American animated television series based on the Spider-Man comics published by Marvel Comics.
Bad Qualities
- It feels like a glorified toy advertisement for only kids rather than a proper Spider-Man cartoon.
- Like Ultimate Spider-Man, Spidey and His Amazing Friends, Hulk and the Agents of S.M.A.S.H., Avengers Assemble and Guardians of the Galaxy, it was made so Disney could get kids to buy toys.
- Bland and cheap art-style with generic character designs that looks like it's trying to rip-off Ben 10: Omniverse. The character designs were criticized for being inaccurate, with Peter Parker described as looking like a hybrid between Ben Tennyson and Harry Potter from the book/movie franchise of the same name.
- Has the same generic "short logo intro" that Ultimate Spider-Man and Avengers Assemble had.
- The show's length has been doubled in Season 3, leading to episodes being stuffed with pointless padding.
- Peter Parker is an annoying character, as he acts like Sheldon Cooper from The Big Bang Theory, Donatello from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and Izuku Midoriya from My Hero Academia more than Peter Parker, as he always talks like a nerd. One example includes him analyzing how to defuse a bomb in the middle of an action scene.
- It tries to go back to the serious plots of Spectacular Spider-Man, but fails miserably since the plots are rather bland and uninteresting and turn into some inconsistently "light-hearted" theme that drags everywhere.
- The pacing is nothing but to rush about.
- Forgettable villains (some are based on comics or not) who are toned down to appeal to kids, which is unacceptable since the Spider-Man franchise is known for its memorable rogue gallery.
- It does things other Spider-Man shows already did, such as crossing over with other Marvel heroes (albeit rarely in this series), the other Spider-Men appearing, and most of the villains have been seen before in older Spider-Man shows.
- It goes into the Spiderverse concept way too quickly, starting as early as the second season, and this only happened to sell more toys.
- Patton Oswalt was a terrible choice for voicing Uncle Ben.
- On that topic, Otto Octavius/Doctor Octopus' redesign looks too much like Patton Oswalt. What doesn't help is that Otto is now a more nerdy teenager than Peter instead of a middle-aged scientist.
- Spider-Man dabs at one point in a forced and dated attempt to "get down" with the kids.
- Unlikeable characters like Otto's father, Torbert, and his bully named Steve (who is much like Flash Thompson).
- Poor grasp of the source material.
- As mentioned before, Otto Octavius is a teenager instead of a middle-aged scientist.
- Norman Osborn becomes Hobgoblin instead of Green Goblin.
- It took a hiatus for over a year right in the middle of the Superior Spider-Man arc.
Good Qualities
- Decent animation.
- It feels less like a rubber stamp MCU advertisement, unlike the previous series.
- The Maximum Venom arc was decent.
- The show undoes Ultimate Spider-Man's tendency to make Peter as selfish as possible and be a superhero just to massage his own ego. Here, he's back to helping people because he wants to.
- Some may appreciate the anime-esque art style, though the opinion on it is divided.
- Spidey's homemade suit being in the series is nice.
- It at least tries not to be over-the-top and zany like Ultimate Spider-Man.
- The show's version of Jackal is fairly memorable and dangerous compared to his comic book counterpart and his involvement with creating clones from the Clone Saga.
- Scott Menville does an impressive performance as Doctor Octopus. In fact, the voice acting is still good like Robbie Daymond as Peter Parker
- The action can be entertaining.
- It tries to adapt recent events from the comics like The Superior Spider-Man and the Venomverse. Many fans even feel it improves the stories from the recent comics.
- Several writers who worked on the comics also work on this series.
- While mainly based on the more recent comics, it also features several nods to comic stories from earlier eras in Spider-Man's history, including appearances from several characters who never appeared in any previous Spider-Man adaptations making their debuts here, such as Puma and Slyde.
- The season improves somewhat in Seasons 2 and 3:
- For people who disliked Venom being Flash Thompson from the beginning, Season 2 saw Eddie Brock returning after being absent from Ultimate Spider-Man.
- Season 3 finally introduced Mary Jane Watson and had Peter show romantic interest in her again, as well as having Max Modell go through some major character development.
- Baby Groot appears in the series, but for only one episode and just like his MCU counterpart, he’s very cute but he’s cuter because his voice actor made him sound like a cute toddler.
