Squid's Visit is an episode from season 6 of SpongeBob SquarePants.
Plot
SpongeBob tries to get Squidward to visit his house, which turns into a horror show.
Why It's a Horror Show That Shouldn't Come for a Visit on TV
- As with many episodes from the dark era of SpongeBob, it's another Squidward torture episode.
- Lots of continuity errors:
- Squidward says that he's never visited SpongeBob's house, yet he has in the episodes "Nature Pants" and "Can You Spare a Dime?".
- Patrick said that Squidward visited his house only one time. In "Patrick SmartPants", Squidward tested the brain fluids inside the rock. In "I'm With Stupid", he told Patrick that his parents arrived. Squidward also visited Patrick's rock in "Breath of Fresh Squidward" and "The Thing".
- In this episode, Squidward says that he has never called SpongeBob. But he had previously called him in Home, Sweet Pineapple and The Paper.
- SpongeBob is at his extreme worst in this episode as he harasses Squidward by wanting him to visit his house, besides there's a joke where SpongeBob cries in various places because Squidward doesn't want to visit him. Besides that, he somehow makes an exact replica of Squidward's house down to the tiniest detail, which only serves to horrify Squidward, besides that he partly made Squidward forget that he left a casserole in the oven and because of that his house was burned down.
- The worst offender is that he knows all the details of Squidward's house, which goes under the stalker territory.
- Filler scenes, like when SpongeBob suggests that Squidward visit his home, which plays out very slowly.
- Animation errors such as:
- When Squidward shouts, "Ever!" in SpongeBob's face, one side of SpongeBob's white shirt turns transparent for a very brief moment.
- When Squidward first enters SpongeBob's house, there is a portrait of another squid on the wall, but with an orange face and a blue shirt. However, when the camera pans in front of Squidward's face and he says, "No! It isn't!", the painting now has a green face and a white shirt.
- When SpongeBob reaches for the iced tea to give to Squidward, one of his blue eyes turns yellow for a split-second until he turns back around.
- Most ovens are not flammable, so unless they were really ancient, most ovens would not have caught fire like Squidward's did. Even if Squidward's oven was flammable, it is highly unlikely that it would have been able to set fire to the entirety of Squidward's house that quickly.
- When Squidward is sad because his house is gone, the vacuum disappears, but when Squidward is about to fall, the vacuum reappears.
- The humor is quite mediocre and forced, and is usually based on SpongeBob intimidated Squidward or Squidward suffering or Squidward being rude to SpongeBob, among some mediocre jokes are:
- SpongeBob starts crying and screaming at Squidward, which lasts for 10 seconds.
- SpongeBob crying and telling Squidward to visit him, which lasts for 7 seconds.
- A creepy scene where SpongeBob breathes heavily while on the phone with Squidward.
- Squidward slips on some rash cream that SpongeBob threw on the floor.
- Squidward steps on SpongeBob.
- "Aw, don't worry, Squidward! You're more than welcome to stay at my house until you get your house fixed!" is what SpongeBob says while Squidward's house gets burned down.
- As with "One Coarse Meal", the episode failed so horribly at doing horror-comedy and is not fun compared to other episodes such as Squidward in Clarinetland, Fear of A Krabby Patty, Don't Look Now, The Nasty Patty, The Graveyard Shift, The Ghost of Plankton, One Trash Krabs, and Wormy which managed to do horror-comedy well. speaking of Wormy, It can be a very scary episode from season 2, Due to the horsefly close up.
- A very scary scene where Squidward has a mental breakdown is extremely horrifying, especially the spooky scary face he makes, which looks as mentally ill as possible.
- Half-bad ending: When Squidward finally gets his vacuum cleaner back, his house burns down because he left a casserole in the oven. SpongeBob then says he can stay at his house, causing Squidward to have a mental breakdown.
- On top of that, right when Squidward screams "SPONGEBOB!", SpongeBob makes a very unpleasant grin.
Redeeming Qualities That Can Come for a Visit
- Patrick, Squidward (despite being mean to SpongeBob), and Mr. Krabs are all likable characters.
- Despite its errors, the animation is still great as usual.
- Some funny quotes such as:
- "I don't even know what that is!"
- "My rash cream?" *closes the cabinet* "That little sneak!"
- "Oh, some knucklehead left a casserole in the oven."
- "Never!"
- Mr. Krabs: "Well... it's almost quittin' time, Squidward! You... got any big plans for after work?"
Squidward: "Nope." - "SpongeBob, thank you so much for that lovely invitation but I must respectfully tell you I will never visit you. EVER!!!"
- Unlike other Squidward tortures, this episode treats SpongeBob like the bad guy.
- Half-good ending: At least Squidward won in the end.
Reception
- This episode was heavily criticized by fans, landing in the "Top 10 Worst Episodes of SpongeBob" list by WatchMojo. This episode has a 5.8 rating on IMDb, alongside To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants.
- It was originally #11 on MoBrosStudios' worst SpongeBob episodes, but when Anim8ball (his other channel) revisited the list, he removed it.
Trivia
- In this episode, Squidward revealed that he never went in SpongeBob’s house, which is false. Here are few examples as to why he's lying:
- In "Banned in Bikini Bottom", he continued his cashier duties inside SpongeBob's house when Miss Gristlepuss banned Krabby Patties.
- In "I Was a Teenage Gary", he entered inside his house to fool SpongeBob that he was babysitting Gary when he wasn't looking so well; even having to give him snail plasma should he fall ill when all he was is dehydrated
- In "Sleepy Time", he along with all of SpongeBob's other friends (except for Patrick who asks if anyone has a quarter for his dream) confront him for appearing in their dreams and ruining them.
- In "Can You Spare a Dime?", he literally moved into SpongeBob's house but there: he was a freeloader which became clear as many months pass by and Squidward had no intention of finding new employment, one that didn't accuse him of stealing from inventory and instead taking full-on advantage by being completely dependent on SpongeBob by making him a manservant of the like. He had to drive his bed towards the Krusty Krab just to kick him out (Side Note: Being allergic to newsprint is a real allergy because Freddie said his mother Mrs. Benson was allergic to it, but with how much time Squidward's been enslaving the homeowner who gave him a place to stay in; it's easy to say that he's lying)
- This episode was ironically paired with another infamous episode, To SquarePants or Not to SquarePants.
