Super Bomberman (スーパーボンバーマン, Sūpā Bonbāman) is an action game for the Super Nintendo. It's one of the first four player games to ever be produced for the SNES and is also the first game in the Super Bomberman series.
Plot
"Far to the north of BomberMan's hometown, Peace Town, lies the modern metropolis Diamond City. There, the evil Carat Diamond and his cohort, scientist Dr. Mook, are holding a Robot Tournament with robots specially designed for their combat and offensive capabilities. Hoping to steal BomberMan's advanced combat capabilities, Diamond has created a fake BomberMan to go to Peace Town and kidnap the real BomberMan. Aware of Diamond's plot, Black Bomberman heads out alone to face the fake BomberMan. But Black BomberMan is defeated and his castle is taken. Somehow Black BomberMan escapes and seeks refuge with White BomberMan, and warns him of Diamond's evil plan. Soon, wave upon wave of enemy robots begin their advance toward Peace Town. Now our two heroes must join forces to overthrow the evil Diamond !!"
Why It Super Rocks
- For starter, the game is faster than the previous games and at such it play even better than ever, and while Bomberman II was also great, it wasn't as good as this game simply because it doesn't had much variaty and play slighly slower even if it was fast.
- The gameplay is really fun and an improvement over the previous games, as here it is fast-paced, had balanced gameplay (meaning the difficulty is not as annoying) and it overall doesn't feel boring at all.
- This is even more fun to play when you had all or most of the upgrades because you are faster, having more fire length and had lot of power ups, which is great to play and this is also because it make you overpowered.
- In fact, if you had almost all the upgrades, you can sometime complete a level in less than 10 seconds!
- This is even more fun to play when you had all or most of the upgrades because you are faster, having more fire length and had lot of power ups, which is great to play and this is also because it make you overpowered.
- Even if it is repetitive, the level design is perfectly decent and is very fun, as we say, simple but fun.
- It was the first game in the series to be still called Bomberman in Europe, which was how the franchise got more well know in Europe, and it help that it is one of the first Bomberman game released there.
- The soundtrack is very good and memorable, as well as having some of the most iconic songs of the whole franchise, the most notable exemple is the Area 1 theme that is extremely catchy and unforgettable, and is also one of the most iconic track of the whole franchise, and was remixed a lot afterward.
- And then there's some other epic musics such as the boss theme or even the final area music that make you know that you're near the end of the adventure, in a similar way to some of the Rayman games.
- While not the best, the bosses are quite pretty fun to discover their paths and while they are poorly executed and too easy, they are rather unique for a Bomberman game.
- The graphics are very decent, and while other 1993 SNES games looked better than this, this game had pseudo 3D graphics, which is impressive and it was done before the first Donkey Kong Country, and those graphics would be even better in Super Bomberman 2.
- The controls are decent and responsive, even if they didn't aged well (see BQ#4).
- Some new power ups are introduced in this game, and some are even important power ups in the whole franchise, such as the kick and the glove, which are iconic.
- The multiplayer is very fun and can be played with 4 players, one of the only SNES game that can be played with 4 peoples at once.
Bad Qualities
- The game is way too easy in comparison to most 90s Bomberman games, as when you had all the upgrades, then it's nearly impossible to lose or at least getting a game over, especially if you play extremely well.
- It is way too short, even for a 1993 SNES game, as it last about 40-50 minutes, in comparison Bomberman II which was released on the NES in 1991 last more than 1 hour.
- The bosses are pretty bad because not only they are way too easy but their paths aren't the best because they are barely even dangerous and you will almost never suffer from dangers.
- In addition, the final boss is without a doubt one of, if not the worst final boss of the entire franchise and maybe even the worst boss of the whole franchise because his collision for hit him is almost non-existent and he make your bombs explode much faster, which is incredibly annoying and tedious, and not to mention that the bad power ups he drop is annoying and can ruin a run of the game.
- Even worse, if you doesn't had the glove, then you're screwed and you need to wait, which can be very long and even then, sometime you will never had the time to wait and you will get a time out, and also he attack and thus you can't even defend yourself.
- While good, the controls are very slow-paced in comparison to the sequels, and they are rather clunky when you doesn't had any speed power ups.
- The game is very repetitive, as many levels are pretty much the same but had differents enemies or had different placements for the blocks.
Reception
The game received positive reviews by critics and fans of the franchise and is considered to be the first truly popular Bomberman game and is remembered even to this day.
Trivia
- In Bomberman (1990), Bomberman II, and Bomberman '93, Black Bomberman was a villain and was antagonistic to White Bomberman. This had been the case in several other games as well. This is the first game to fully abandon his role as White's arch-nemesis and join him as a close ally.
- The Japanese version features a few scenes from the story after waiting at the title screen. The English version just goes straight to the demo.
- In the manga Kimi to Pico-Pico, a girl and a boy can be seen playing Super Bomberman (along with Ganbare Goemon 2) in the chapter 20 titled Bomberman and Ganbare Goemon.
