Super Bomberman 2 is a video game developed by Produce! and Hudson Soft and released on the Super Nintendo Entertainment System. It was released in Japan on April 28, 1994, in North America later the same year, and in Europe on February 23, 1995. It is the second installment of the Super Bomberman series, part of the larger Bomberman franchise, and the only installment without a 2 Player story mode (although one was originally planned).

Plots

Five Alien Cyborgs, calling themselves the Five Dastardly Bombers, arrived on Planet Earth seeking the original Bomberman. Bomberman attempts to fight them off, but is taken captive on their Spaceship. He awakens in a prison cell in Magnet Bomber's base and must battle his way to freedom.

Why It Rocks

  1. Amazing graphics for it's time, the amount of details present in this game is fairly impressive for it's time and still look great to this day, with even the sprites being improved from the first Super Bomberman game while still having the same look and charm, such as being slightly more detailled or being much more colorful.
    • The backgrounds are extremely detailled too and look amazing for the time it came out, almost looking like it come from a 2D PS1 game, in fact it is almost on par with the first Rayman game released in 1995 for the PS1, though that game look better than this.
    • The animation are now way more fluid, moving much faster than in the first game and also, the movements look way better here, showing how much improved this game is in comparison to the first.
  2. The controls are improved, instead of being responsive but stiff, this game had tight and responsive controls that always respond to your commands and they never are complicated to use (well except for one small exception, see BQ#1), and are overall faster to use than in the first game.
  3. The level design is very varied and one of the only 2D Bomberman game of it's time to had a lot of different levels in all the worlds, and while the levels doesn't include more than one section like in Bomberman '94, it still had lot of unique things that overall does a good job to stand out from the other games.
  4. The gameplay is really good and extremely fun, as well as being very fast-paced, so much to the point of being one of the fastest Bomberman game ever released, at least with all of your speed upgrades, and because of this, this game offer non-stop fun for the entire adventure, and it help that the level design is much more varied this time around.
  5. The soundtrack is awesome and is just as good as the previous games in the franchise, and had lot of bangers to listen to, such as the Area 1 theme, the boss fights music, the Area 6 theme (which is possibly the best ost of the entire game), just to name a few.
  6. The bosses are way better this time since they are very challenging and fun, and their paths are unique, which is much better than the poorly executed boss fights in the first Super Bomberman.
    • Best of all, in this game the bosses had two phases, the first one is for the bombers, and the second one is for their robots, which give the game a lot more bosses and they are all very interesting and fun.
  7. It is much more challenging than the first game, and for good reasons.
    • First off, there are no checkpoints, so if you die then you had to restart all over the beginning of the game, but thankfully this game was designed with this in mind, so it at least not a problem.
    • The enemies are a bigger treat since they now had projectiles and they are fairly fast and intelligent, despite that most of them are defeated with only one hit once again.
    • The bosses as stated before are much more challenging, enough said.
  8. The manga for the Japanese version of the game is really great and serve as a great adaptation of the game, despite that unfortunately they didn't produced an anime based on it.
  9. This game introduced the 5 Dastardly Bombers that are good villains for the Bomberman franchise, and the Golden Bomber which would later appear in other '"Bomberman games.
  10. The plot is decent and is more existent than the first Super Bomberman game as that one have no intro, the intro is also decent even if later Super Bomberman entry had better intro.
  11. The cover art is very cool looking for both regions, especially the JP one.

Bad Qualities

  1. While the controls are great in most occasion, there's a phase that is very unresponsive and clunky, and it's the jumping in 3-6, which is hard to master because Bomberman always had troubles to reqpond and this will cause a lot of cheap deaths.
  2. While a great and epic area, Area 6 is completely unfair with puzzles that are pure try and errors, to the point that if you fail, in some of the levels you will had to kill yourself and try the level again, which is a huge problem because of the fact that 8f you get a game over, then you lose all of your upgrades.
    • Also, some of the levels are very dark, which make the bombs really hard to see until you get hit by them by accident, and thus you will losing a lot of lives because of this, worst of all, it isn't even idicated.
  3. This is the only game in the Super Bomberman series to not have a 2 player story mode which is a serious letdown as this game had the best level design out of all the Super Bomberman titles.
  4. The final boss, while still better than in the first game, is still not the best because he is incredibly annoying and his clones are the worst offenders, constantly appear to try to kill you and the attacks are horribly hard to dodge.
  5. The ending is almost non-existent, after you beat the Final Boss, there are a short cutscenes of 5 second where Bomberman have exit the Planet Earth where it's blowing up and then it go to the credits.
  6. The game at times can had unfair difficulty, such as in world 2 where the fire blocks constantly respawn, and they kill you if you hit them, which is annoying and tedious.

Reception

Super Bomberman 2 received extremely positive reviews by gamers and fans of the franchise, it is also considered to be one of the best game of the series and by some peoples, it is considered to be the best Bomberman game on the SNES.

Trivia

  • This is the only game in the standard Super Bomberman series to not allow 2 player co-op in the Normal Game.
  • In addition to using bomb explosions, the player can use the Power Glove item to damage enemies and bosses with thrown bombs.
  • The full map theme isn't heard in the game.
  • The sound effect for picking up the Kick item and picking up an apple item is actually someone saying the word "kick".
  • Pretty Bomber's defeat replaces the normal victory music with a moment of silence.
  • This is the last SNES Bomberman game to be released in North America, Super Bomberman 3 would only be released in Japan and Europe, while Super Bomberman 4 and 5 (as well as Panic Bomber W) would be exclusive to Japan.
