Super Bomberman 5 (スーパーボンバーマン5, Sūpā Bonbāman 5) is an action puzzle game developed and published by Hudson Soft and released for the Super Famicom in 1997 in Japan only. It is the last game in the Super Bomberman series.
Story
Planet Bomber was a peaceful place until one day when the evil Terrorin appeared. He entered Bomber Penitentiary and released the Fiendish Bombers from their cells. They agreed to help Terrorin to help conquer the universe in exchange for their freedom. When Bomberman heard of this, he and Black Bomberman, along with their Rooi companions, set off to defeat the Fiendish Bombers and stop Terrorin's evil plan.
Why It's A Bomb Party (In a Good Way)
- The graphics are very impressive to look at for a late SNES game, along with Mega Man & Bass. It's even more like a 1996 PS1 game than an SNES game, which says a lot about how great this game is.
- In fact, they look so good that it's the best-looking game of Bomberman on the SNES, along with 4.
- No matter what environment you are in, it'll never be bad, thanks to how Hudson Soft designed the game.
- The intro is still epic and as good as the first four Super Bomberman games, though it's not as great as Super Bomberman 4 due to being shorter.
- Fun and challenging gameplay; the gameplay is very fast-paced (especially when you get enough shoes for getting faster); the power-ups are as good if not better than the other Bomberman games on SNES; overall, this game is one of the most fun games you would ever play on the SNES and can even be classified as one of the best SNES games and even the best multiplayer game on SNES.
- Unlike the first four games, this one is not linear, and you can select in what zones or levels you want to start. This formula would later be used in other Bomberman games, such as Bomberman Max 2. When you complete a level, it's even got some different portals for getting to the level you want to play, which gives an incredible amount of replay value for a Bomberman game.
- For the first time in the series, there is a save feature that makes the game easier to complete instead of passwords, where you must write them somewhere or remember them.
- The soundtrack is both awesome and epic; it's got some of the best, if not the best remixes of any Bomberman games released before Super Bomberman 5, such as the first Super Bomberman on SNES or Bomberman '94, some of these remix sound even better than their original counterparts such as the music from both the world 3 and world 4, due to these, the soundtrack of this game is one of the best soundtrack of any Bomberman games along with Bomberman Hero and Super Bomberman 2.
- The game has a lot of callbacks from the previous Super Bomberman games, with the first four games combined and the fifth being entirely original, which makes it a great idea like Sonic Generations. Ironically enough, the concept of this game was made before Sonic Generation, due to this game being released in 1997.
- Unlike the first four Super Bomberman games, this one is very long and can take 10 to 20 hours to complete if you go to 100% or 200% with a total of 200 levels to do, and unlike other good games that do this, there are not here for padding the lenght of the game, and they are actually good to pmay, possibly because Bomberman is simple to design or just because the game was made with love.
- The controls are improved from the previous Bomberman games, even Super Bomberman 4, as they are more faster and they are even more tight, maybe because of the awesome animations that Bomberman get.
- After the pretty bad ridable creatures in Super Bomberman 4, here the louies return, and they are better than ever and have multiple abilities.
- Gyarooi is pretty fast, and she can kick soft blocks away, which could be useful depending on your wiew.
- Hanerooi can jump like the purple louie in Bomberman '94, allowing for getting ride of some complicated situations such as being blocked by your own bombs.
- Kerooi can kick bombs, which is useful when you don't get the bomb kick item; otherwise, he is not so useful except for getting one more hit.
- Magicarooi is the best louie in the game, as he can create a huge line of bombs depending on how many of them you have.
- Marooi can roll at great speed, which can be useful in speedruns, and even without speedruns, he is also fun to use.
- Nagurooi, who can kick players in battle mode but can't kick enemies,
- The game has one of the greatest amount of replay values out of any Bomberman game, with 200 levels as mentioned above, an encore mode, and a multiplayer mode as usual. There are other unlockables when you do 100% of the game (see WIABP #12).
- When you complete the game at 100% or 200%, there are three rewards that you will receive.
- The player receives a random, game-altering password.
- The Golden Bomber becomes a playable character in the Battle Game.
- The player can select their 100% complete file to start an "Encore Game".
- The glod version of the game includes even more arenas than the original version of this game, which is great if you want to play with friends in this game.
- Amazing story, even by Bomberman standards.
Bad Qualities
- The boss fights are very unfair and can be considered some of the hardest, if not the hardest boss fights of the series, with the first one being predominantly luck-based. It's so bad that even the horrible number of hard boss fights in Super Bomberman 4 are better (even though they are good in that game).
- Making a 100 or 200% run is incredibly tedious due to the portals that make you go through an already-beaten stage, and when you complete at least 60% of the game, it's become a true pain to do the 100%.
- Depending on the path you take, the game can either be too short or too long.
- Again, when you die you must restart the level where you are in, this is even more of a problem considering the difficulty of the game that is higher than Super Bomberman 3 and 4.
Reception
Super Bomberman 5 receives highly positive reviews from critics and players alike. This game is often considered to be one of the best Bomberman games of the series, the best one on SNES, and even one of the best SNES games ever made.
Trivia
