The Day Before was a multiplayer survival horror "MMO" extraction shooter video game developed by Fntastic and published by Mytona. Set in the future, players controlled a character who must traverse and survive in the fictional, post-apocalyptic New Fortune City, which has been overrun by zombies. Released on December 7, 2023, the game was panned by critics. Originally the final game from Fntastic who shut down after four days after release, they came back in September 26, 2024.
Plot
You play as a survivor of a zombie apocalypse who must rebuild society.
Why It Should Be Dead the Day Before Release
- This game, despite being developed over a five-year period, is a major asset flip. Literally everything from the weapon models, UI, map design, and even the whole city is taken from the Unity Asset Store.
- Despite being a multiplayer game, there is no voice chat, forcing players to rely on alternatives like Discord.
- Plagiarism: The font for the title copies The Last of Us font while The Act Man points out that one of the trailers outright copies the animation cinematic from Call of Duty: Black Ops: Cold War Zombies.
- There are no story missions whatsoever. Once you complete the tutorial mode, that's it.
- Atrocious voice acting that makes it feel like an AI tool was being used to make the game.
- Clunky combat, shooting is really clunky, too, and not melee combat.
- Atrocious AI that enemy zombies are just walking towards you.
- The world is also very barren, leaving you with nothing but a walking simulator.
- The extraction missions are frustrating, there are very few extraction points, and when you die, you lose everything you own.
- There are a horrendous number of bugs and glitches, some of which downright make the game unplayable. For example, having the player have a giant's size or having clipping issues for textures makes the player fall in limbo.
- Overpriced: This game was $50 on launch, and considering the lack of content and broken launch, it can be considered a scam.
- The game can be considered false advertising as it was marketed as an MMO but is an extraction shooter.
- Fun fact: One ex-Fntastic developer said that this game was never an MMO in the first place.
- Speaking of the marketing, there are so many things fishy about it that many players can call this game a scam.
- For one, the developers frequently insisted that they did not scam anyone.
- In their apology letter, they said "man hours" instead of a better term "time".
- The CEO of Fntastic deleted all of his information on Twitter when his studio was shut down. The only allegedly known information on him is that he's from Singapore.
- To add insult to injury, one user wrote an angry tweet at the company with Fntastic simply saying "shit happens", which is not the way to respond to this, and it only makes matters worse.
- The game ultimately killed Fntastic's reputation, as they gave up and shut down four days after launch. Originally, the studio closed for good, but out of nowhere, they came back on September 26, 2024, apologizing for the state of the game and asking players for a second chance.
Redeeming Qualities
- The graphics are good for 2023 standards.
- Fntastic and Mytona refunded those who brought the game.
