The Final Destination (alternatively known as Final Destination 4) is a 2009 American 3D supernatural horror film written by Eric Bress and directed by David R. Ellis, both of whom also worked on Final Destination 2. Released on August 28, 2009, it is the fourth installment of the Final Destination film series and the first to be shot in HD 3D.
Plot
Nine years after the Flight 180 disaster, While enjoying a day at the track, Nick O'Bannon (Bobby Campo) has a horrific premonition of his friends and him all dying in a freak accident involving many racecars. Seconds before the vision comes true, he manages to convince them to leave. Although they cheat death then, the survivors each begin to meet a grisly end, and Nick tries to figure out a way to escape a similar fate.
Why It Should Rest in Pieces
- This film doesn't have enough horror to be a horror film.
- There is so much camp in the film that it feels more like a black comedy than a horror film.
- Most of the characters, such as Hunt and Carter are incredibly unlikable. For example, Carter is a racist skinhead, to the point where he whistles racist songs and uses slurs out in the open, and when it comes to Samantha's death, the only thing Hunt is "upset" about is losing a pretty woman, rather than feeling sympathy.
- The acting is poor for the most part. For example, when Samantha dies from getting a rock shot right at her eye, you can see her smiling.
- The deaths in the movie don’t make any sense and come off as hilarious rather than disturbing; for example, when Lori’s leg gets caught in the escalator gears, she starts choking up a lot of blood.
- If you cut out Hunt Wynorski's death scene and the mall premonition, it isn't a horror movie and rather feels like something from 1000 Ways To Die, Superjail, or Happy Tree Friends.
- Horrible and cheap CGI, especially Carter's severed head when it lands on George's lawn.
- A ton of illogical moments. For example, during the premonition, how do all of the cars fly in the air and crash at once? It's also almost impossible for almost every car in the speedway not to try to stop.
- The film is way too short, being only approximately 82 minutes (the shortest of the series). Because of this, it doesn't have enough time to build up any tension.
- Plot hole: Nick's premonition of the raceway accident has Jonathan Groves dying before Janet and Hunt. But later on, Janet and Hunt are going to die before Jonathan.
- The sex scene in the middle of the movie involving Hunt is completely unnecessary and only there to make viewers more interested in this poor excuse of a movie, even though Hunt said his last wish before dying was to "get laid".
- The theatrical film that the characters are watching in the cinema happens to be The Long Kiss Goodnight. Although the film came out in 1996 and the movie is set in 2009.
- The usage of the 3D isn't exactly right.
Redeeming Qualities
- "I got my eye on you two."
- The mall explosion scene was pretty gory.
- Great gory kills, such as Hunt's and Samantha's deaths.
- Good acting from Bobby Campo, Mykelti Williamson, Krista Allen, and Haley Webb.
- Nick and George are solid characters.
- The film could've worked better if it had not been converted to 3D.
Reception
The Final Destination received generally negative reviews from critics, who considered it the worst installment of the franchise, while criticizing its lack of originality, the weak plot, dumb characters, poor CGI, and the usage of 3D, but some praised its performances and humor. Review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reports that 28% of 96 critics gave the film a positive review, with a rating average of 4.2/10. The site's consensus states: "With little of the ingenuity of previous installments, The Final Destination is predictable, disposable horror fare." Metacritic, which assigns a normalized rating out of 0–100 reviews from film critics, has a rating score of 30 based on 14 reviews. It is considered by critics and fans to be the worst film in the series.
