The Looney Tunes Show is an animated series that ran from 2011 to 2014. It aired on Cartoon Network, and is based on the Looney Tunes franchise.
Summary
In a sitcom take on Looney Tunes, the series follows the antics of roommates Bugs and Daffy, as well as their friends, like Bugs' dense girlfriend Lola, Daffy's feisty, no-nonsense girlfriend Tina Russo, stuttering, naïve and innocent Porky Pig, and many others. In addition, episodes typically include a song in a segment called Merrie Melodies, and in Season 1, a CGI segment called Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote, new CGI shorts focusing on the titular duo.
Why It's Uniquely Looney
- It is a great improvement of the terrible spin-off Loonatics Unleashed and it saved the Looney Tunes franchise from it's downfall.
- Great animation for both the 2D segments and the 3D Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote shorts. The 2D segments in particular evoke the cel animation of the classic shorts.
- The characters are as lovable as ever, and so are newcomers like Tina Russo.
- Lola’s characterization is hilarious, makes the show feel alive, and is a lot more fleshed out than her Space Jam persona.
- The premise of putting the Tunes in a sitcom-esque environment is unique.
- Great episodes, such as “Here Comes the Pig”, "Members Only", "Double Date", "Customer Service", "Sunday Night Slice", "Super Rabbit", "DMV", "Casa de Calma", "Devil Dog", "Best Friends Redux" etc.
- Funny moments, like Daffy’s moments of stupidity.
- The series manages to retain the clever humor from the original shorts.
- Amazing voice acting.
- The Road Runner and Wile E. Coyote CGI shorts in Season 1 are very funny, like the classic shorts were.
- The “That’s all, Folks!” gags in the Warner Bros. Animation logo are creative, and a nice nod to the Warner Bros. logo in The Bugs Bunny Show.
- Catchy songs, especially in the Merrie Melodies segments.
Bad Qualities
- The premise, while it is unique and that it does work here, is very divisive from the start, as the series is traditionally slapstick-based and not sitcom-based.
- The arrangements of the iconic theme songs can be way too dissonant, unlike Bill Lava’s take on "The Merry-Go-Round Broke Down" in the 1960s.
- A few bad episodes, such as "Fish and Visitors", "The Float", "Newspaper Thief", and "Mr. Weiner".
- Although Daffy Duck is charismatic, funny, or very kind at some points. He, in this show, has the characteristics of him being conceited, selfish, arrogant, mean, narcissistic, snooty, stuck-up, haughty, incompetent at everything, douchey, irresponsible, and temperamental, not to mention that he is also treated as the show's chew toy in this show.
- The second half of the first season isn't as good as the first half or Season 2.
- In some of the non-English voiceover dubs that are distributed in the series, some of the voices for the characters such as Daffy Duck, Pepe Le Pew, Tina, Silvestre, and Gossamer are poorly intoned or poorly chosen (miscast).
- It has some continuity errors like in the first season, Bugs Bunny's fur is colored purplish for some weird reason while his fur is colored back to his original gray color in the second season.
- It lasted too shortly having only 2 seasons and 52 episodes.
Trivia
- The series began as Looney Tunes: Laff Riot and was supposed to be slapstick-based, like the cartoons. The episode “Casa De Calma” and the Sylvester and Tweety plot of “Point, Laser Point” were holdovers from Laff Riot, the latter being intended as a 6-7 minute short, while the Merrie Melodies and Road Runner & Wile E. Coyote segments were intended for the series as well. It also had a similar artstyle, Joe Alaskey was going to voice Bugs, Daffy, Sylvester, and Tweety, and Tina Russo was going to be Marisol Mallard. - This wasn't the first Looney Tunes show to be set in a sitcom esque format, as Warner Bros. made their previous attempt with Taz-Mania in 1991. It had exclusive original characters, such as Taz's family and the outback characters (namely Digeri Dingo, Wendal T. Wolf and Francis X. Bushlad).
