"The Unkindest Cut" is the 19th episode of the 16th season of Family Guy. It is the 308th episode overall.
Plot
Quagmire's penis gets cut off in a freak accident involving a shark, forcing him to figure out how to live without it, while Stewie and Brian look for Mort after finding out about a $10,000 reward they can get if they turn him into the police for his involvement in a drug-related scam.
Unkind Qualities That Got Cut
- Like "Peter Problems" and "Con Heiress", the episode is notorious for having a "joke" that goes on way too long.
- In this case, it is Peter trying to get a boat into the water, which goes on for about 2 minutes; it also doesn't help that the episode brings this up multiple times. While that joke is still pretty funny, it suffers from being dragged on for too long
- The scene where gremlins suddenly come out of Cleveland's back and start killing everyone on the beach is pretty disturbing and not funny at all (thankfully it didn't show the gremlins killing the people at the beach).
- During one part, Quagmire almost kills himself with a gun. Then we get a scene where Peter, Cleveland, and Joe think of possibilities with the gun in their hands, which eats up a bit of time.
- The scene where the shark bites Quagmire's "private part" is very disturbing to watch.
- The joke itself at least doesn't take more than two minutes since it is one of those tame jokes that does not last long. That is the least of the problems with this episode.
- The subplot where Brian and Stewie go on an adventure to find Mort consists of very little substance aside from Jewish stereotype jokes.
- Brian and Stewie trying to figure out Mort's password with common Jewish stereotypical phrases is a prime example.
- The subplot ending is just pathetic, it turns out that Mort had turned himself in to be rewarded while Brian and Stewie get nothing.
- Brian and Stewie trying to figure out Mort's password with common Jewish stereotypical phrases is a prime example.
- The fourth wall is broken too much in this episode, and very poorly, like some scenes where Dr. Hartman is a writer.
- He says "Mort is so hard to write for."
- When he writes the ending to the subplot, he takes a shot of "the ol' Sorkin genius juice."
Kind Qualities
- Some funny moments like Peter robbing Taco Bell after thinking about the gun and the boat scene (despite going on for 2 minutes).
- Brian, Stewie, and Quagmire are still likable here. Brian and Quagmire aren’t flanderized like they usually are.
- Quagmire manages to get help from his dad.
- While the subplot has to do with stereotypical Jewish jokes, The subplot of Brian and Stewie looking for Mort after finding out about a $10,000 reward is decent, despite the ending.
- "That’s the sound of peeing out your daddy’s wiener."
Reception
"The Unkindest Cut" has a rating of 6.6/10 on IMDb. Meanwhile, PhantomStrider called it the second worst Family Guy episode from 2015 to 2020.
