Trolland (also known as Trollz) is a 2016 CGI film made by The Asylum.
Plot
Fenn is a young troll who hates pranking people and is teased so much he runs away. When a evil park ranger starts capturing the other trolls, the outcast troll has to rescue his friends and family without pulling any pranks.
Why It Should Get Trolled
- Laughably bad animation that achieves the feat of being ugly, horrendous and abysmal all at once. It makes it look as if the characters' body parts were broken, which is definitely not what you’d expect from a 2016 kids movie.
- Although the character designs are okay, the trolls look disgusting, looking like their ears have lots of ear wax.
- The character designs for the humans, while good, look pretty generic and bland.
- To add insult to injury, the poster looks like it could be an animated hybrid with at-least passable animation, thanks to the addition of realistic feet and the brightness, and the troll world in the poster looks beautiful compared to the film's version, which is just a dark cave.
- Terrible motion capture that makes the movie look like it was recorded on Xbox Kinect.
- Terrible layering that makes it look like the characters were just slapped onto the foreground, looking like the characters are floating. It does not help that the backgrounds are possibly taken from real-life, making the characters look out-of-place.
- The introduction outright contradicts itself. As it states that the trolls have never been seen by humans, only to show a troll captured soon later.
- The movie was released in 2016, in order to ride on the success of Dreamworks's Trolls, but of course it had to fail. In fact, this movie's alternate title, Trollz, is literally trying to ride in the release of Trolls even more, not only that, it uses the title (Trollz) to a previous TV adaptation to the Troll Dolls.
- The characters poorly express their emotions. They just smile. In fact, in his review, Saberspark unfavorably compared this to another animated film called Joshua and the Promised Land, where characters can actually emote.
- Terrible lip-syncing. Whenever the characters talk, their mouths barely move. Some scenes however, their mouths don't move at all.
- Some of the characters are forgettable, aren't likeable, and one dimensional like the bullies of the main character, Hayden, that only pick on him just for not having friends, talking to bugs with being afraid of them, and reading a book.
- The plot is just forgettable and unoriginal, it's just about trolls pranking humans. That's it.
- Very confusing perspectives, for example, a notebook lying on the ground that makes it look massive, most likely due to the awful layering.
- Terrible lighting that makes characters look like they are possessed.
- Sometimes the color scheme is abruptly.
- Olaf is a very generic main villain with generic goals on hunting down trolls and nothing else compared to other hunter-like characters.
- There are LOTS of animation errors:
- In one scene, Olaf rips his short-pants, and we can see the rip, but in the next scene, his short-pants are no longer ripped.
- In another scene, when Olaf tries to capture a troll, two girls, one with dark hair and the other one with blonde hair appear, and they ask him what was Olaf doing, and Olaf lies that there was a big snake, and gets away, making the two girls laugh, but they hear a troll (Possibly Jarvik) laughing, which makes them run off, and when they do, the blonde girl suddenly has dark hair.
- When Yussop talks to the trolls, some of the trolls don’t look at him, and they move their heads right and left like crazy.
- In the scene where Yussop announces the winner of the Prankapalooza, Jarvik says that it’s time for her to take a nap, but she can't close her eyes, and her hand starts freaking out.
- When a character tries to hold something, instead of clamping down on the object, the object in question just floats around their body.
- There’s a scene where the background starts glitching.
- In one scene, one of the trolls is throwing cookies at the other trolls, which look like clip art pictures cut and pasted onto the screen.
Redeeming Qualities
- Some unintentionally funny moments, such as when Hayden runs through the bushes.
- Both Fenn and Hayden are likeable characters.
- The voice acting is good, specially from Dick Van Dyke.
- As mentioned above, the character designs are good except for the trolls.
Reception
Trolland currently holds a 19% audience rating on Rotten Tomatoes and has a 1.9/10 on IMDb. Saberspark considers it the worst movie of the 2010s.
