Western Energy is the fourth episode of Helluva Boss' second season and the eleventh overall. It debuted on Vivziepop's YouTube channel on May 20, 2023.
Plot
Striker exists and things sure do happen.
Why It Rocks
- Instead of being a butt monkey in this, Moxxie instead has to fight Striker, who kidnapped Stolas. But to change things a bit, Millie is also fighting Striker.
- Similar to that, we can also see Moxxie fight some more before attacking Striker.
- The scene where Striker almost kills Stolas is very, very frightening. So scary that we can see blood pour from Stolas' wound.
- Speaking of Stolas almost dying, when Blitzo hears that Stolas got hurt, it is revealed that he truly, deep down cares about Stolas's well-being.
- Striker making a comeback is very refreshing since he was so hyped to return, his last appearance being left on a cliffhanger. It's nice that the show proves to the audience that villains are capable of affecting the story in such a way.
- Andrealphus has a very nice design, and the expansion of the Goechia family is a good inclusion to the series.
- Also, his castle looks amazing, so there's that.
- Some things have been revealed about the highly-sought after Heavenly weapons.
- Amazing music and animation, as usual. But that doesn't surprise anyone. Even though Striker's song was a bit campy, this is counting at the end.
- The scene where Striker is being fought by Millie and Moxxie is the highlight of the episode. It's incredibly well-animated and well-choreographed.
- Edward Bosco's portrayal as Striker is very nice despite having a big roll to fill in place of Norman Reedus.
Bad Qualities
- The pacing would've been much slower and better if they had removed Loona and Blitzo from the B plot where Loona gets a needle. If the subplot had been removed, the pacing would've been much better. Or, better yet, it would've been better as its own short. But overall, this subplot feels very distracting, contrary to what's going on in the main plot, where Striker almost murders Stolas.
- Striker, while still likable, was somewhat and slightly flanderized. In his first appearance, he sings a short song about how everyone loves him. In Western Energy, he was portrayed as being completely self-absorbed and unintelligent. The reason that Striker sang that short song about how everybody loved him was solely to get under Moxxie's skin, because he was manipulative and calculating. He was set apart from the rest of the regular antagonists because of how serious he made the tone of the episode.
- Blitzo's line, "Stolas can get hurt?" is stupid because he was made aware in the Harvest Moon Festival episode that Striker was capable of killing Stolas, even acknowledging that fact verbally. It would've made more sense if the line was "Stolas got hurt?"
