Big City Greens the Movie: Spacecation is an American animated science fiction musical comedy film directed by Anna O'Brian and based on the Disney Channel animated television series Big City Greens, created by The Houghton Brothers. It stars the series' regular voice cast and includes new characters voiced by Renée Elise Goldsberry, Cheri Oteri, Joe Lo Truglio, Jack McBrayer, and Raven-Symoné, as well as astronaut Scott Kelly playing himself. The film follows the Green family, who go on a road trip in space and must work together to save Big City from being destroyed by an asteroid.

The development of a Big City Greens film at Disney Television Animation was announced in January 2022, although the script had already been written a year earlier. The original songs featured in the film were written during lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Animation services were provided by Rough Draft Korea and Sugarcube, whilst series composer Joachim Horsley composed the film's score.

Premise

When thrill-seeker Cricket Green tricks his country family into taking a “road trip” in space, chaos in the cosmos ensues! Despite growing frustrations between Cricket and his dad, the two must learn to appreciate each other’s unique perspectives to prevent Big City from being destroyed by an asteroid!

Why It's Still Green (In a Good Way)

  1. The animation is fluid, smooth and amazingly well done by Rough Draft Korea and Sugarcube, it even improves in some songs which makes it even better! The CG animation is also very well done and it's cool seeing the show having CGI animation for the first time.
  2. Gwendolyn is still likeable and is a great twist villain. Her appearance in the end credits is also funny and good. Despite her being a slight karma houdini in this film she's still likeable and isn't flanderized.
  3. The songs are also catchy, especially the beginning and the reprise of "We're Going on a Big Family Vacation", it's very well choreographed and the lyrics are very well done!
  4. Speaking of songs, Commander Void's song is catchy and its nice seeing new characters debut on the movie.
  5. The voice acting is still good as usual.
  6. Some tearjerkers here and there, especially when Bill and Cricket are venting, which is really emotional and might even make you cry.
  7. The visuals are nice and good.
  8. The jokes are also well executed, and funny.
  9. The writing has massively improved even in the original series, the writing is still good, funny and decent.
  10. Commander Voyd starts off as a strict, stern commander to a more sympathetic, gentler and sensitive person, overall her character development is pretty good for the duration of the movie.
  11. Alexander and Terry make a speaking cameo which is nice to see them again.
  12. Roger Craig Smith does a good job voicing one of the background characters in the Big Coffee bit, while it's kinda filler, it's still a good speaking cameo as well as Alexander and Terry's cameo mentioned on #11.
  13. The singing is pretty decent too, so kudos to Chris Houghton and Shane Houghton for doing a good job on this film!
  14. Like WISG (IaGW) #1, Rough Draft Studios did a good job with the animation and along with Sugarcube as well, which shows how talented Rough Draft Studios is and how Sugarcube can show come potential
  15. Good Moral: Enjoy your vacation with the ones you love, which is a heartwarming moral to teach the viewers.
  16. "We don't have to redo old memories, we can create exciting new ones!" is touching and inspirational.

Bad Qualities

  1. Gwendolyn, while likeable in the original series and the movie, she is a slight Karma Houdini who never received any comeuppance for her actions.
  2. Although unnecessary, there's toilet humor.

Reception

It received a 8.0/10 on IMDb.
