Monstra-City is the first half of the first episode in the fifth season of The Powerpuff Girls.

Plot

When the Mayor finds the deed to Monster Isle, the monsters move to Townsville causing havoc between monsters and humans.

Why It's A Monstrocity

  1. The plot seems quite inconsistent - first it has the girls trying to attack a chicken, but then stop when the chicken says that the monsters get evicted from Monster Island. But the inconsistency is when the monsters start attacking Townsville, become friends, and then just start attacking again.
  2. A bit of gross-out humor, such as when a fly creature spat on a human and with one person having a slug body instead of legs.
  3. The episode's plot feels like a rip-off of Nickelodeon's Aaahh!!! Real Monsters and Monsters, Inc. (if you count the "monsters interacting with humans” part), although those were executed much better.
  4. Although the Mayor wanted to put the monsters in Townsville, they ended up causing chaos and angering the humans, as mentioned in WIAM#1.
  5. Buttercup's "SHUT UP!!!" could get a bit annoying to some when Blossom talked to the monsters & humans about making Townsville a friendlier and kind town.
  6. The monsters & humans keep fighting over whether the monsters want to stay in Townsville or not. And even when the girls tell them to not fight, they continue fighting & arguing, making them not learn a single lesson from the girls.
  7. This episode started the dark age of the original PPG (albeit in broadcast order), due to the cruel moments for this premise.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. Monsters living in a town seemed like a great idea, despite the poor execution.
  2. The girls at least try to make the monsters and humans get along together.
  3. There is arguably a heartwarming moment where a human and a monster hug after they find out they have something in common. The scene is followed by RQ4.
  4. Good Ending: The monsters file a lawsuit against the Mayor (though he did sign a contract) and so, they get their home on Monster Island back.

Reception

  • This episode was disliked by many people as it ignored the message about good people and good monsters having to be nice to each other all the time.
