Naruto x Boruto: Ultimate Ninja Storm Connections is the seventh instalment of the Ultimate Ninja Storm series developed by CyberConnect2 and published by Namco-Bandai games for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series.
Bad Qualities
- The main problem about this game is that it is not only a rehash of Storm 4 but also a major downgrade from that game and the first three games, and had so many problems that will be talked about in the next pointers.
- The controls are downgraded from the previous games, and while they are way more simple, they aren't even that great because of being unresponsive and because of that, sometime the game can be somewhat hard to play and add some artificial difficulty, which wasn't even present in the other games.
- While the graphics are beautiful, some of the areas had awful lightning that make those look way too bright in a similar way to Rayman 3D, a port of Rayman 2.
- The story mode is absolutely terrible, unlike the other Storm games, due to how much cutscenes it had and other problems that will be talked in the sub pointers.
- The biggest problem about it is the absurd amount of cutscenes that are more present than the actual gameplay, which aren't fun to watch (see BQ#5), and ruin the entire story mode.
- There's less explorations than the previous games, even less than the first Storm game, which is unnaceptable and if they wanted to do a story mode similar to Ultimate Ninja 3, then they could have done much better and it failed, and speaking of that game, both the third and especially 4th Ultimate Ninja games had way more contents than this, making the situation worse.
- There's not that much secrets to find, which is dissapointing, and reduce the replay values in the worst way possible, compared to the previous games and even the Ubisoft games duology on the Xbox 360 that had more secrets than this game.
- The game isn't even a totally new Storm game, instead it is just a rehash to the point of feeling more like an expension pack or a dlc rather than a real game, and this is because it had mostly the same characters models but albeit upscaled a bit, or the gameplay that is similar (though there's nothing wrong about that) but having lot of bad changes that somehow manage to make it the worst of the series despite not being that bad.
- Speaking of the previous pointer, there's some bad changes to the gameplay, such as the input for the second jutsu being the same as the original input for chakra tool throw, but for some weird reasons, chakra tool throws have been removed.
- The cutscenes are extremely boring to watch since it is just dialogues similar to other bad Doraemon games, and the dialogues are also boring, which is shocking for a Naruto game, since those are know for their funny dialogues, especially in the anime, when you know about that, you know that you are in a major red flag.
- Not to mention that they are very long, some of them last 10 minutes, and not in a good way.
- Even worse, sometime there's 5 of them at a single time, which mean that you need to skip them all 5 times a lot of times, which is incredibly tedious and if you think about it, it last more than 25 minutes, which is way too long for cutscenes that are just dialogues.
- In addition, Naruto: Uzumaki Chronicles 2 had this problem with lot of long cutscenes but at least they we're better and there's was more gameplay in that game.
- To be fair, they should have made the cutscenes in an anime style similar to Naruto: Rise of a Ninja, with this it would have been probably much better.
- The QTE are very terrible because they are horribly easy to the point of not even being a good thing because even if you press the wrong button or other buttons at the same time, you will still win no matter what, seriously you can take those away from the game and absolutely nothing would change.
- There's a lot of lack of contents, and there's less contents than even Ultimate Ninja 5 on PS2, a 2007 game! Which is unnaceptable and was why the game was such a dissapointement for a lot of peoples.
- For some weird reasons, damage scaling is implemented, but the game is unable to properly register it at times if the combo is desynced enough, which might hint that this game is rushed or at the very least unfinished.
- At launch and even nowadays sometime, there's an insane amount of FPS drop that are even worse than the Zelda Switch games, as sometime it can even goes to 5 FPS, no WE don't kid you about this!
- The online multiplayer is very bare-bones. It's relying to uses Peer-to-peer connection instead of rollback netcode, except this connection server is WAY worse.
- The French dub is mediocre and the english dub is just plain awful.
- The english dub had voices that sound extremely unfaithful and because of poor editing, it sound like the lines we're re-dubbed in AI, which sound horrendous.
- As for the French dub, it had passable voice acting but the problem is that some of the characters had voices that feel like it don't had emotions in them and the announcer voice is easily the worst case of it.
- The game is extremely short, lasting only 3 hours if you exclude the cutscenes.
- Terrible AI, most of the time the opponents do nothing other than stand still and even if sometime they do attack, they are incredibly easy to dodge, thus making the game way too easy.
- They said that it had 130 characters but it's actually a lie, since there's not 130 unique characters but rather it had skin change and not original characters, which might hint that this game was made just to be a cash grabs and advertising it falsely just to get money.
- Overall, not only this game is a downgrade from the fourth game but also a huge cash grab, the lack of contents, rehash from the fourth game, boring story mode and horrible framerate drop, it clearly prove it.
Good Qualities
- Much like other mediocre Naruto games, it can still be fun to play and the gameplay don't had much problems, it mostly the game itself that had so many problems (such as the poor story mode) that make this game unfortunately not great.
- It even had some changes, and while those aren't that great, some are good such as:
- Ninja items with the D-pad are now infinite in usage.
- Idle chakra regeneration rate has notably increased.
- Hitstun times are now more generalized across the cast, which may or may not interfere with intended hit effects of attacks from prior games.
- The counter returning from Storm Revolution now inflicts a crumple instead of a ground slide.
- Hitting a victim during crumple state, ground slide (mainly with a chakra dash) or with a tool throw when they are downed causes a re-stand state.
- Mid-ranged tilt moves are removed, and a replaced with a second chakra technique/jutsu/U1, and for some characters, they now also have essentially 3 chakra techniques usable on-hand.
- The customizable character has been returned in this game from Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution that has been omitted in Naruto Shippuden: Ultimate Ninja Storm 4.
- It even had some changes, and while those aren't that great, some are good such as:
- Decent soundtrack, although not as awesome as Storm 4.
- The controls when they aren't unresponsive are tight, and aren't that bad, but still they are a downgrade for those who played the previous Storm games in the past.
- Amazing graphics that are very colorful and capture the feel of the series extremely well, even in comparison of the previous games, it's also had a great art style.
- Like the previous games, the artworks are cool.
- The Japanese dub is still excellent as usual.
- Speaking about it, it is the first Storm game to had the french dub and some other dubs than english, which is nice even if the french dub isn't as great as the original series.
- The game has more subs than predecessor, including the Indonesian subs.
- Even though the character roster is lacking, there's new original character, such as Nanashi.
Reception
The game received mixed reviews in comparison to the other Storm games and was considered to be a huge downgrade especially because of the gameplay, lack of contents and abysmal framerate drops, it received a score of 68 on Metacritic.
It's also considered to be the weakest Naruto Storm game ever.
Trivia
- The feature to customise the appearance of playable characters, first introduced in Naruto Shippūden: Ultimate Ninja Storm Revolution, finally makes a reappearance after being omitted in the previous game.
- It is unknown where in the timeline the Special Story takes place - it appears to at the least follow after Boruto: Naruto the Movie, though Boruto is clearly shown with his Kāma.
- The developers were accused by the English voice actors from the game to have re-dubbed over their lines with AI. The developers revealed that the questionable voice work was just the result of poor editing, and that it will be fixed in a later update.[1]
