Newgrounds (collectively Newgrounds.com, Inc.) is an American online entertainment and social media website and company. It hosts user-generated content such as games, animations, audio, and art in four respective website categories. While AOL and Geocities had statically hosted user-generated content, Newgrounds provided visitor-driven voting and ranking of user-generated animations.

The site's founder and owner, Thomas "Tom" Fulp, founded the site and company in 1995 and produces in-house content over at the headquarters and offices, based in the Glenside neighborhood of Cheltenham Township, Pennsylvania.

Why It Rocks

  1. It has a lot of good games and movies like There She Is!!!, Meat Boy (which was the Flash prototype of Super Meat Boy), Friday Night Funkin', The Impossible Quiz series, the Tankmen series, the Pico series, the Madness Combat series, The Original Henry Stickmin series, the Windows parodies, the ASDF movie series, the Violent Vincent music video, and the legendary Super Mario 63. The art and music sections have a lot of goodies too, like the ones used in Geometry Dash levels.
  2. There are many funny animators such as Oney (Chris O'Neill), Mr. Weebl, HappyHarry, Egoraptor (Arin Hanson), Kirbopher, Oska (inactive as of 2012), Brawl Taunts, Eddsworld, Sr Pelo, etc, but without them, Newgrounds and Flash wouldn't exist!
  3. Tom Fulp, the founder of Newgrounds, is a nice person.
  4. It has a lot of nice technical things most Flash-oriented sites do not have.
  5. They were revolutionary in the 1990s and 2000s, with classic games like Pico's School. The insanely popular video Numa Numa Dance originated on Newgrounds, bringing lots of popularity on the site.
  6. Porn (at least the explicit side of it) can be hidden with the filters and are hidden with guests and accounts that are under 18 in the age section. This is often made usual as it helps separate the 2D/3D porn animations from the mainstream franchises.
  7. Very good moderation. The site bans live-action/real porn, reposts of someone else's video/Flash, and gameplay videos such as Geometry Dash videos prevents them from clogging up the site. They have a BBS post called the Elite Guard Barracks where users report things like stolen videos/flashes and those get taken down by mods, assuming that they're not blamed (when a submission ends up below vote threshold and gets deleted).
  8. Newgrounds was one of the most influential sites in the early history of the internet.
  9. Some Newgrounds shows such as: Egoraptor, Eddsworld, and Weebl and Bob even deserved to have their own official accounts on YouTube. (Sr. Pelo originally joined YouTube and DeviantArt just before he joined Newgrounds) It lets you host your games and videos that you have made on Newgrounds only after if it gets saved and not blammed.
  10. Newgrounds makes use of Ruffle for their flash games.

Bad Qualities

  1. It brought us some terrible Internet users like Suzidragonlady, Lizkay, emily-youcis, Gonzossm, and Toyslasher.
  2. Back in 2005, a trolling group called The Barney Bunch (started by BarneyPoop) posted loads of inappropriate flash animations and it almost ruined the entire site. In fact, HiT Entertainment threatened to sue Newgrounds because of their activity.
    • Thankfully, they were banned from Newgrounds, moved to YouTube, moved on from trolling, and focused on humor based on TTS.
  3. All of the Adobe Flash Player systems that were compatible with Newgrounds, that was shut down on December 31, 2020, so it could mean that you cannot watch these animated flash videos on Newgrounds anymore, unless some videos are compatible with Newgrounds Player. Newgrounds also partnered with a flash emulator called Ruffle and many of the games are on a preservation project called Flashpoint.
  4. Despite the moderation being good, when your project on the portal gets taken down from the site by the moderators such as a parody animation, it doesn't give you a reason why it was removed, unlike the audio portal.
    • Much like YouTube, they tend to take down stuff that wasn't against the rules before until they added a new rule out of nowhere. Many of the old flash animations and games suffered from this, and most of them are now lost media thanks to this.
  5. There are games that promotes child abuse and animal abuse such as the very infamous Baby Basher game in where a black man called by the name's title kills babies with a sledgehammer in extremely gory ways to the point the gore is even comparable to Happy Tree Friends, Mortal Kombat 11, the modern era of Family Guy, South Park, and 1000 Ways to Die. Luckily that game no longer exists as it haven't got revived to be played on Flashpoint.
  6. Even though the filters are pretty good, you can easily get away with poorly rating your game, disguising porn as "E".
  7. Sometimes, Newgrounds enforces the NG Player app for Flash games that supposedly don't support Ruffle. Even games normally working with Ruffle still require the player! You can add ?emulate=flash at the end of the URL to enforce Ruffle, though.
  8. Some of the content can get way too violent and way too edgy at times.
  9. Some countries banned the website due to some content being pornographic (even Newgrounds has age restrictions to prevent young audiences looking at this stuff) preventing users to watch and play stuff in the website.
  10. As of October 2022, the site now has age restrictions, similar to YouTube and DeviantArt, despite the fact that many AO content was widely available to access without much as logging into your account until now.

Trivia

  • In 2002, the owner of Newgrounds, Tom Fulp, in collaboration with John Baez, Dan Paladin, Brandon LaCava, and Nick Dryburgh, co-founded an independent studio The Behemoth, which is known for making Castle Crashers, Alien Hominid, and BattleBlock Theater.
