South Park: Tenorman's Revenge is a platform video game based on the American animated television series South Park. Developed by Canadian studio Other Ocean Interactive, in collaboration with South Park Digital Studios and Xbox Live Productions, and published by Microsoft Studios, Tenorman's Revenge was released on March 30, 2012, on the Xbox Live Arcade service for the Xbox 360 video game console.
Plot
The frame story takes place in the distant future when an otter tells the story of the Time Child before moving on to the day his half-brother Scott Tenorman stole his Xbox 360 hard drive, which he and his friends Stan Marsh, Kyle Broflovski, and Kenny McCormick had left all their saved games on. The boys vow to go wherever in time it takes them to recover it.
Why It's An Amazing Revenge
- The idea of doing a 2D platformer game on the South Park franchise was amazing and this game executed this concept in a great way, but unfortunately that is the only one if you don't count the canceled Game Boy Color version of the first South Park game.
- The game is faithful to the series, especially to the episode "Scott Tenorman Must Die" Since the plot revolves around Scott having his revenge on the four boys, this may also be a good alternative way to having a character having revenge after being defeated or having bad things happening to them in the show, and this game does a great job of doing this concept.
- The first five thousand viewers who input a code that comes with the Season Fifteen DVDs and Blu-rays received a free download of the game back then.
- Incredibly tight and responsive controls, especially because the characters will never, ever be unresponsive, making the game easy to play and to understand too.
- The combat is also tight and responsive, and is the main reason why it is fun, despite not being the very best, but still even better than Snow Day! (which was mediocre, though).
- Also, the controls as said before are simple to use, since there aren't too many buttons to use and you can easily figure out the controls by yourself, the special moves for example are mapped to X, making them even easier to understand.
- Very fun gameplay that is addicting, since much like Doraemon 4: Nobita to Toki no Okoku (another awesome 2D platformer), the gameplay is simple but fun enough to never, ever be bored, this is especially true when playing as multiplayer (see WIAAR#8).
- Also, despite being a bit repetitive, the game is so fun that you may not mind the repetitiveness of the game due to being addicting, and also because of the combat that while not the best, is still pretty decent and fun to do.
- Speaking of the combats, they are pretty fun and decent, since while not the best, the combat is satisfying because of the impact, it's also likely the inspiration for the RPG games (which were even better than this game).
- As usual, the voice acting is great and the actors reprised their roles for this game, even better, the humor of the series is well represented in this game.
- The multiplayer is great in this game since you can play as four players in one level, however, the screen can be hard to see at times if you play with four players.
- Not to mention that this makes the game easier to play and to beat some levels at times, also some of the levels are shorter if you play with four players or at least with one friend.
- Not to mention that this can also be hilarious to play with four players since that can be funny when someone loses or when you beat a boss easily because of playing with other people, similar to the Bomberman games.
- Great cutscenes, especially the beginning and end cutscenes since they had an amazing art style that is even upgraded from the show since it had more details, however, the small cutscenes in-game are also really great and funny, especially when the characters insult Tenorman.
- The story is amazing and the best that came from a South Park game, at least before Stick of Truth came out, since the story is extremely well explained and the story is also about time travel, which wasn't done in the show before this game came out.
- Also the beginning and end cutscenes also explain the story well, since the narrator explains it interestingly, and also, the great art style of the cutscenes helps since they make these more interesting.
- Also, it's got a surprising plot twist in the end about the fact that it is not just an adventure that Cartman and his friends lived, but was also a story told by the narrator, even though for some it might ruin the adventure that you did in this game.
- Much like other South Park games, the soundtrack is awesome, epic, and memorable since it is incredibly catchy and doesn't even feel repetitive. It also fits the levels and even the superhero costumes' music well since it's got different tones such as a light-hearted one in the earlier levels or an epic one when you get the costumes and in some of the last levels.
- Also much like Ristar on the Sega Genesis, there is not any bad music in the game at all, showing how great the soundtrack is even when compared to the show.
- Amazing graphics that are very good looking for the time, since it's extremely close to the show it's based on and the graphics also are even better than the previous Xbox 360 game, since it is very detailed and colorful, and some of the levels even had backgrounds that fit the dark tone of the game, such as the hell levels.
- The character sprites are directly taken from the show, but in a good way, since they all look incredibly clean for the time and even feel a bit more detailed at times, even their costumes' sprites are great since they also look the same as the show, this would also be a feat for South Park: The Stick of Truth which was released 2 years after this game.
- The backgrounds are also very detailed and cool looking, since they are very colorful and are faithful to the show's art style, there are also some hidden details to them, making them even better.
- Great boss fights that are easily some of the best in a South Park game since they all are challenging and balanced, they aren't too hard nor too easy and they can be fun, also their paths are somewhat easy to understand, also they are never, ever rehashed from some previous bosses, making them varied too.
- Pretty decent level design that is usually well designed and also long, some unique levels are creative or have a ton of fun ideas even for a South Park game, but it can still have way too long levels, especially if you go for the 100%.
- Like most South Park games, there are some, if not a lot of funny jokes that are as good as the show.
- All of the characters have different abilities, and as expected from a South Park game, they are awesome and fun to use, especially the superhero ones.
- Stan can throw a football to hit long-range targets and hit locks. Stan can transform into his superhero persona during the game, which can use his drill to dig through soil and reach secret areas.
- Kyle confuses the ginger robots and gets through barriers by revealing his ginger hair. Kyle, as his superhero persona can glide through the air for long periods.
- Cartman uses his stomach to break through walls. Cartman, as his superhero persona, was also seen performing agile moves in the trailer and can climb and leap up vertical walls, this can make for some awesome shortcuts.
- Kenny can jump further than the other boys. Kenny can transform into his superhero persona which, if killed, can then return invulnerable and move through obstacles without dying.
- The box art is cool, amazing, and even epic, also shows that Tenorman is the main antagonist of this game too, meaning there isn't even any misleading info.
- A huge amount of replay value thanks to a lot of secret paths to explore, or even if you want to do 100% of the game, you might also want to replay this game over and over due to how fun it is, not to mention that the secret paths are very well made too, much like Doraemon 4: Nobita to Toki no Okoku on SNES.
- Challenging difficulty that is well balanced for the most part, it's not too hard nor too easy, and the levels are also some well made that the difficulty won't be unbalanced at all.
- Not only that, but the multiplayer would make the difficulty either easier or harder, making it even better if you want an easier game or a harder game.
- You can even play online, which can make the game have even more replay value.
- Ton of weapons to choose from, which are extremely awesome to use, and some of them are broken, but in the absolute best way possible since they deal a ton of damages and also had a satisfying impact, in comparison to Snow Day!.
- The price of this game is really good, as it costs only 9.50€, like the previous game on the Xbox 360, which makes it a great price for such an awesome game.
- Flawless hit-detection.
- Ternorman is once again a great character and even is at his best in this game, since he had many awesome-looking robots, acts even more like a villain than in the episode Scott Tenorman Must Die on the show, and he is really funny too.
- The game length is pretty long, lasting 5 to 8 hours of gameplay, and considering how much replay value there is in this game, it will make the game even longer and if you go for 100%, then the game length might be even longer too.
- Epic final boss that is likely the best of the entire game due to this reason, since he is challenging and the environment of this boss is cool too, the robot also is cool looking too.
- The ending is really good and even reveals that the entire adventure was a book, however, this might have ruined the experience for some players.
Bad Qualities
- In the tutorial for Kenny's special move, they say that you need to press A for a second to do the high jump, instead of X, which can confuse people and make them think that the move doesn't work or even isn't in the game.
- If you lose all of your lives in a level, even if you are close to the end, you will need to restart the level all over again, this is a major problem considering how long the levels can be, this is especially a huge problem if you go for the 100% completion since the levels are even longer than if you do any%, this might also likely been the reason of why this game didn't get so much positive reviews back then.
- However, there are still a lot of checkpoints in a level so at least it's not as horrible as in Snow Day! (in which you had only one life and if you die you need to restart all over again).
- The game in single-player can be extremely frustrating at times due to either too many enemies or because of the 100% that is even harder without other people.
- However, even in multiplayer mode, it can be frustrating too due to the screen being huge at times, making you have a ton of cheap deaths.
- However, even for single players the game is extremely fun, so it's not a problem, especially for those who prefer having more challenging difficulty or prefer playing at single and not with other people.
- Some difficulty spikes even when playing as multiplayer since the levels are so big that at times you might be lost or in some levels where the platforming sections are extremely hard.
- As we said for the platforming, sometimes despite being awesome to do, it can be extremely hard either due to poor game design or because of the enemies' placements that are a little lackluster, especially for the later levels.
- Sometimes, there might be way too many enemies it's making some of the sections quite hard, not to mention that it might make you lose all of your lives and then you will have to restart all over again due to this problem.
- While not really a bad thing, some of the levels last long, like 30 minutes at times.
- There's still only the English dub and not any other dubs such as the French one, which is pretty disappointing.
Reception
While the game received mixed reviews from critics, as it had a score of 52/100 on Metacritic[1], the game received mixed to positive reviews by gamers and South Park fans who did find the game to not be as good as Let's Go Tower Defense Play!, but still a great game overall, the story, graphics, and soundtrack were praised, while the level design was a little criticized.
Trivia
- This is the only 2D platformer of the franchise and the only platformer so far except for the canceled Game Boy Color version of the first South Park game that was a puzzle platformer.
- It's the last South Park game released on Xbox Live, and is the second last South Park game to be released on Xbox 360 at all, the last being Stick of Truth.
