The Fairly OddParents: A New Wish is an American animated television series based on the 2001 animated series The Fairly OddParents. The series premiered on Nickelodeon on May 20, 2024. It will also be released on Netflix internationally later in 2024.

Plot

Ten-year-old Hazel Wells has just moved to the big city of Dimmadelphia because of her dad's new job. On top of being in an unfamiliar environment, it's the first time she's been without her brother, Antony, who's just left for college, leaving her lonely and unsure of herself.

Why It's Magical Again!

  1. It is a huge improvement over the last two seasons of the original show, along with the live-action/animated hybrid reboot, since it keeps the charm of the original show and has a much better grasp to the source material by acknowledging and following "Da Rules" of the first eight seasons of the original series, which is surprising because some of the staff members (Alec Schwimmer) previously worked on the ninth season of the original series, which comes to show how much they learned though their mistakes.
  2. The new animation is fluid, smooth, and decent. It helps that the animation is a huge improvement over the horrid flash animation we had in the second half of season 10 of the original show and the animated scenes of the infamous live-action reboot.
  3. Cosmo and Wanda are no longer flanderizied and redeemed themselves and now have their original personalities back. Same with Jorgen Von Strangle.
  4. Likable original characters, especially the main character herself Hazel who like Timmy and unlike Chloe from season 10 of the original series and Vivian and Roy from Fairly Odder, she has a reason to deserve fairies as she misses her older brother and is nervous to move to the city.
  5. The theme song is catchy and good.
    • It helps that the first episode paid a nod to the original series theme song.
    • The first episode is also decent.
  6. Some funny moments.
  7. The voice acting is good, decent, and solid as the fairies voice cast return.
    • Cosmo's voice, despite still being annoying like in seasons 9 and 10, is improved.
  8. The humor is well-executed and genuinely funny to some.
  9. It ignores all the events that happened in the last two seasons of the original series and infamous live-action series.
  10. The soundtrack by Caleb and Brian Chan (who also did soundtrack of Angry Birds: Summer Madness) is brilliant, as well as being very superior to Guy Moon's score.
  11. Unlike season 10 of the original series, most of the current Nickcom shows and the live-action reboot, this CGI reboot doesn't try to be hip, modern and appeal to the 2020s audiences.
  12. Similar to the original series, the title cards are well-drawn, especially since they are still in 2D animation.

Qualities That Still Broke Da Rules

  1. The animation can be stiff and uncanny at times. which makes the character designs look a bit weird.
  2. The voice acting can be annoying to some old-time fans.
    • Cosmo's high-pitched voice is still annoying to listen to, just like with seasons 9 and 10 of the original cartoon and live-action series.
  3. Many new characters, while likable, in this series can look weird.
    • Sometimes the characters can end up looking like rejects from Big Nate or Jimmy Neutron.
    • Dev looks and feels like a carbon copy of Dexter from Dexter's Laboratory.
  4. Some of the characters from the original series such as Poof (the fairy god child) are still missing in this reboot.
    • To be fair, the series was recently premiered, so we have to wait for the next episodes to come if such characters reappear or not.

Trivia

  • This is the second series in the franchise that premieres on a streaming service (Netflix), after The Fairly OddParents: Fairly Odder (formerly on Paramount+), though it will be premiering internationally.
  • Although many assumed he was not involved, original series creator Butch Hartman was involved with the series as executive producer alongside Fred Seibert according to an interview. Usually, creators that don't have involvement simply get an executive producer credit, like SpongeBob SquarePants creator Stephen Hillenburg, who despite his death in 2018, continues receiving an executive producer credit on the series.

Reception

Currently, this show earned a 6.8/10 on IMDb. Critics and audiences have considered it a massive improvement to the franchise and its praise for visual animation, new likable characters, and faithfulness to the original series.
