Tom & Jerry is a video game for the Game Boy originally released in 1992 and was remade on the Game Boy Color in 1999 by Majesco Sales Inc. and licensed by Nintendo.
Plot
Jerry hears Tuffy screaming for help that he is lost. Tuffy's shouting gets Tom's attention; it is up to Jerry to find Tuffy first before Tom does.
Bad Qualities
- The main problem about this game is that the level design is completely confusing and because of this, this game feel like a maze and not in a good way, because of this, it completely ruin the chance of this game being any decent.
- The controls are incredibly annoying to use and are even worse than some other terrible games by Beam Software such as Taz-Mania 2 or Baby T-Rex, as they are horribly clunky to the point that it completely ruined the chances of this game being decent, since if they were better, then maybe the game would had been decent but no.
- Not to mention, they are very slippery to the point that it feel like he run on soap, yes it's this bad, and it might even cause some cheap deaths.
- As stated in BQ#1, the level design is absolutely horrible, and are some of the worst you might see from a Tom and Jerry game, it is even worse than the terrible SNES game, as not only does the levels are horribly confusing, but they also are so poorly designed that sometime you might even lose yourself, the only levels that come close from being good/decent is the 1st, 2nd and 3rd levels, this is one of the exemple of where you should rather do linear levels other than levels with ton of places to go.
- Level 4 is where it start to be a mediocre platformer, since it is incredibly tedious to even play this level because of the elevators, which are one of the main focus of the level, which is boring and annoying.
- Level 5 is a pretty bland level, but still kind of frustrating because of the platforming sections being awful to get though because of the clunky controls, and also had poor enemies placements.
- Level 6 is one of the most annoying level of the entire game, because not only does there almost no platforming sections or any good actions, but also it is filled with so many obstacles that are just horrible to get though, howewer this is not the absolute worst level of the game but was close to.
- Level 7 is even worse than Level 6, because not only does it is once again confusing to navigate but also it is filled with too many obstacles that are even worse than the previous levels and it could make you rage quit the game because of how bad it is, also it had little to no health item.
- Level 8 is easily the absolute worst, since not only it is a confusing maze, but also the level design here is complete crap to the point of being almost unplayable, and the level design of that level doesn't even fit the game controls.
- Level 9 is just your typical bland level where you must go up until you get to the end, not to mention that the platforming sections are once again incredibly atrocious.
- Level 10 is a horrible way to end this overall mediocre game because not only does it is filled with many horrible enemies and obstacles placements but it goes for way too long, it might be even more tedious than all the other levels because of how bad it is.
- You had a run button, but the problem is that it is almost impossible to use it without getting either hit by an enemy or obstacle but also you might screw up platform sections because of this, as the run button make the controls even more slippery than it's already is.
- The game had little to no plots at all, the only plot present is that you need to save Tuffy from Tom and that's it. Even for a Tom and Jerry game, that plot is very generic.
- Some of the levels had misleading titles, such as the level 8 where it is called the garden, yet most of the level take place in water, that name would had probably been more appropriate for the level 2 but not the 8th one.
- Atrocious hit-detection and collision detection, you may think that with your attacks, you did hit Tom, but it did not since not only does the collision is horrible but the clunky controls doesn't help, and thus it make Tom horribly hard to hit, sometime you even hit enemies where it clearly easy to see that you didn't get hit by it, you get hit only because of the horrible hit-detection.
- Bland graphics, especially in the Game Boy version since they rather look like an early Game Boy game than a 1992 game, as they are very undetailled and there was plenty of better looking games released at that time such as Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, Doraemon 2: Animal Wakusei Densetsu and Kirby's Dream Land.
- The Game Boy Color version look slightly better due to the addition of colors and a few details added to some of the sprites, which manage to make the game look decent but even then, it isn't outstanding.
- Dreadful enemies and obstacles placements, who are even worse than the SNES game due to being placed always at the worst place possible, and because of this, the game is unfairly hard for almost no reasons, not helping the poor controls.
- There's absolutely zero bosses, which is unnaceptable because even the NES game had boss fights, and if this game would had boss fights, then maybe the plot would make more senses.
- Not to mention that Tom, despite being the main villain, appear only as a regular enemy in some of the levels, which is even more nonsensical!
- Almost no ways to attacks your enemies, as even the projectiles that you can get are useless due to the fact that they can only be used to hit Tom and no one else, which is a severe flaw due to the game having horrible enemies placements.
- The memories mini games in the Game Boy Color version were added but they are nothing more than pointless and bland because they are incredibly easy, even at the last levels, and in fact they are extremely repetitive and boring overall.
- Some of the levels feel like rehash of each other, the best exemple is the level 10, who look like it is level 4, only a bit longer and slightly different but not enough.
- The ending cutscene, while not bad, had zero music playing, which make the ending feel empty, and it might even ruin the ending for some peoples.
Good Qualities
- The cover looks absolutely great for both versions, especially the art of Tom and Jerry, and that's because its completely faithful to the Hanna-Barbera franchise.
- Like previously mentioned in BQ#2, the first three levels are decent, especially since it's nowhere as hard as the rest of the levels in this game.
- If the game had better controls and a proper way to attack your enemies, then the game coule have been decent.
- It still not as bad as the SNES game, despite that the game had an even worse level design than that game.
- The soundtrack is decent, and while it may use the SNES game soundtrack, they sound better here due to being properly done and because they actually were much more appropriate for a Game Boy game than a SNES game.
- This game had cutscenes at the beginning and end of the game, and they are animated, which is quite impressive for a Game Boy game, and even better it is somewhat decent and funny, and it also had the same style of slapsticks present in the cartoon.
- The graphics are still decent at best on the Game Boy Color version, especially for a 1999 GBC game.
