Doraemon: Midori no Wakusei Dokidoki Daikyūshutsu! is an action game, developed by Mobile 21 and published by Epoch, which was released in Japan, in 2001.

Plot

One night, Doraemon and Nobita chase after a shooting star, that fell from the sky, into the mountain. They found a glowing green crystal, that showed them an image of the girl, named Cincia, who pleaded them to save her planet from the Jester, Papajo and Popojo. The gang agreed on this mission, and used the emergency spaceship to head to the girl's planet. However, they're attacked by the Jester, crashed into a meadow area, and lost most of Doraemon's gadgets to them. Together, the gang must recover all the stolen gadgets, find and rescue Cincia with her friends, and defeats the villain.

Why It Rocks

  1. The graphics are very good for an early Game Boy Advance game, as it was released in April 2001, one month after the Game Boy Advance came out, with them being very colorful and detailed.
    • The sprite work is also pretty cute, especially for Doraemon and Nobita, since their sprites are well detailed, and are a huge improvement, over the ones from Doraemon: Nobita to Fukkatsu no Hoshi on PlayStation, and other Doraemon games released, before this one.
    • The color palette is also very colorful, since it uses bright color schemes, and it's been used in a good way, especially for a 2001 Game Boy Advance game. This game might be on par with Bomberman Tournament graphics due to how colorful they are; ironically, both games came out the same day.
  2. Tight, and responsive controls, that are simple and easy to pick up, as they are very simple, and are so easy to get used to, that in less than a minute, you will be used to the controls of this game.
  3. The game is a massive improvement over most of the Doraemon games released before this one, as after Doraemon: Nobita to Fukkatsu no Hoshi, the game series started to go horribly downhill, since there were many horrible Doraemon games, after that one, most notably the Study Boy series, that was still made, and the Doraemon Kart duology, especially Doraemon Kart 2, despite still having some good games, such as Doraemon 3: Nobita no Machi SOS! and its predecessor, Doraemon 3: Makai no Dongeon, but fortunately, despite not being the best game of the franchise, this game is still a very decent game, if not straight up good.
  4. Decent story that is again an improvement over Doraemon: Nobita to Fukkatsu no Hoshi and Doraemon Kart 2, with the plot feeling like it's came from the Doraemon games for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, as most of them have similar stories and are very good.
  5. The soundtrack, despite being forgettable, and sounding like an 8-bit game, isn't so bad, and actually has some decent songs, although it's not as great as the soundtrack from the Doraemon 16-bit games.
    • It's also contain a pretty decent rendition of the Doraemon theme song, with it being catchy as always, and is one of the best songs of the entire game.
    • The soundtrack might also be possibly nostalgic, because of how it sounds. This is especially true, if this game was your childhood.
  6. The new character that was introduced in the game, Cincia, is a good character, but unfortunately, like most characters specifically made for the games, she never appears in any other Doraemon media, which is sad considering that, like some of these other characters, she could have been involved in some great plot for some episodes, especially for the 2005 series.
  7. Making an adventure game, and a The Legend of Zelda clone, is a very interesting idea, and it's been very well executed here, with great gameplay.
  8. All the environments are really great, with great themes, especially at the end of the game.
    • The first level has good themes, and is a bit of a jungle, with a great and colorful color palette, due to how colorful the graphics are. In fact, despite the fact that it's not really original, it is still fitting, for a Doraemon game.
    • The second level has a similar theme to the first level, but is slightly weaker, as the colors are less bright and colorful, but still colorful. It's also full of details, for what it is.
    • The third level is quite colorful and lovely, as the colors are bright and the theme used for the level is great, and it is an improvement over the second level (despite still being good).
    • The fourth level had a very great theme and is one of the best of the entire game, as it is quite colorful, especially the places where there's lava, and the theme might somewhat remind you of Sonic Advance.
    • The fifth level is in a cloud, and the theme is very great, possibly the best one because of how dark it's made the game feel, and the color palette is again pretty colorful.
    • The sixth and last level had a pretty good theme too, and it's a great way to make the game end and was a great choice for the final boss fight.
  9. The boss fights, despite them being easy, are fun and are decent, especially because of their decent concept and their paths that are pretty fun to learn, despite being so easy that you can just shoot at most of them until they die.
  10. The game is very faithful to the Doraemon franchise, especially with the gadgets that Doraemon had to collect through the game or even the story, which feels like it came from a Doraemon movie.
  11. All the characters play differently, in comparison to the Super Nintendo Entertainment System games, especially the Doraemon Kart duology, and they all have a great playstyle.
    • Doraemon is a bit slow, but he is still pretty fast to play, and his weapon is the air cannon, and if he charges it more, then he can kill enemies very easily, which makes him one of the strongest characters in the game.
    • Nobita is faster than Doraemon, and he uses Air Pistol which can fire multiple bullets at once but has lower damage than Doraemon's Air Cannon. Despite that, he is still fun to play, and he can be extremely useful for a speedrun of the game.
    • Shizuka is the second fastest character in the game, and she uses the homing gun, which always hits the enemy with similar damage output as Nobita's air pistol but is a bit more powerful. This makes her one of the most overpowered characters in the game.
    • Suneo is the fastest character in the entire game, and he uses the scaring bomb, which deals strong damage from medium range, making him the most overpowered character in the game since the bombs are extremely useful for your fights or even killing enemies.
    • Gian, while the slowest character in the game, is still not a terrible character to play as, and he uses champion glove to deal massive damage at short range, which can be useful for the boss fights.
  12. When you select a character in the menu when you pause the game, they all have their own theme, which is pretty interesting for a Doraemon game and an adventure game.
  13. Great level design that is very fun, and full of great ideas.
  14. The ending is pretty good, as Doraemon and friends save Cincia and her friends, and in the credits, you can sometimes see a picture where you see the enemies doing their chores after what they have done and some pictures where we can see the Doraemon gang, saying good-bye to Cincia, and some of them, mostly Doraemon, missing her when they enter their planet, which is pretty emotional.

Bad Qualities

  1. The soundtrack, despite having some decent songs, is forgettable, mostly due to it sounding like an 8-bit game for most parts, despite that being a common problem in the early Game Boy Advance games.
  2. It's, sometimes, not really easy to know where to go, and you can get a massive trouble playing the game due to that. If you don't have the maps at the beginning, then you screw up and you will have a hard time beating the levels because of that. This is especially true with levels 2, 4, and 6.
    • Not to mention that the map is a bit confusing as you can't really know where you are in a level; this is especially a problem in level 3.
  3. For the most part, when you beat a level, you had to recollect a map just to know what you're doing, and in some levels, there's isn't any of all, most notably in level 2, where it is extremely hard to know where you must go.
  4. The game for the most part is way too easy, as you will barely get any hits even from a boss if you play extremely well, and at the defensive, you can possibly beat the entire game without even losing any lives. Even Klonoa: Empire of Dreams is more challenging, and it's also an easy game.
    • Even if you shoot the bosses to death, you can still, for the most part, never really die; even Super Mario World boss fights are more challenging than this game.
  5. The game isn't really glitch-free, as there are some glitches that make you stuck, such as this one where you get stuck in the cloud, or there's even one where If you do a special attacks, you glitch out a cutscene if you do it at the right time..

Trivia

  • This is one of the only Doraemon adventure games, with Doraemon 3: Makai no Dongeon and some of the Nintendo 3DS games being the others.
  • This is the first of the two Doraemon games on the Game Boy Advance, with the last one being Doraemon Dokodemo Walker, being the second, and last one.
