Power Rangers S.P.D. (Space Patrol Delta) was the thirteenth incarnation of the Power Rangers franchise, based on the Super Sentai series Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger (Special Investigation Squadron Detective Ranger). It was aired on Jetix and ABC Kids in 2005 and it was produced by BVS Entertainment.
Summary
The story takes place in the year 2025, after Earth has welcomed alien beings to live peacefully with the human race. The protection of the planet falls to their replacements: the B-Squad and their commander, Anubis Cruger.
Why It Rocks
- Bruce Kalish (who previously worked on The Famous Jett Jackson), becomes the executive producer and head writer of the Disney Era of Power Rangers.
- It was also surprising that they had a Pink Ranger for the first time in this season, since Time Force.
- The intro is incredible and it was composed by veteran Ron Wasserman, who has return for this franchise and probably best known as composed the first six seasons of Power Rangers.
- Proper character development: Jack and Z were start off being the thieves until they helped out the B-Squad rangers to become of them.
- Memorable characters like the B-Squad (Jack, Sky, Bridge, Z, and Syd), Anubis Cruger, Kat, and Boom.
- Great storylines, like where Anubis Cruger becomes the Shadow Ranger, Sam becomes the Omega Ranger, and Kat becomes the Kat Ranger.
- It spawned the famous Buttery meme.
- Awesome intro.
- Brilliant villains such as Emperor Gruumm.
- It had a crossover with Dino Thunder and Operation Overdrive (where Bridge only appears in).
- Some of the best special effects, costumes and make-up in the Power Rangers franchise; possibly even the best in those areas before the Neo-Saban Era, by which point technical advancements meant they could do a lot more on the show's budget.
- Great twist late on when it turns out that the A-Squad didn't get captured or killed by Gruumm, but instead decided to join forces with him.
- "Endings" had a perfect finale, where Sky become a Red Ranger and Anubis Cruger fights Emperor Gruumm without the help of the Rangers.
Bad Qualities
- It never had the two-part crossover of Dino Thunder, instead, splinting into two, and both of them weren't really that good as well.
- Too much focus on Sky Tate/Blue SPD Ranger on later episodes.
- Some unlikable characters such as Mora/Morgana, Sam/Omega Ranger and the A-Squad Rangers.
- Kat had become a Kat Ranger only in one episode. Sadly, she will never morph again after.
- Some bad episodes like "Dogged" and "Sam Part 1".
- It never had a team-up with Mystic Force Rangers unlike the Japanese Sentai counterpart.
- A video game based on this season was awful.
- This was the first Power Rangers season to really start making use of "Kalishsplosions", huge explosions that the Rangers jump past in slow-motion. It's less of a probem in this season thanks to the action sequences being fast-paced, but it becomes a much bigger problem by the time of Operation Overdrive.
Trivia
- The new episodes for this season was aired on ABC Family, until "Messenger Part 1". Starting with "Messenger Part 2", the new episodes began to debut on Toon Disney.
- S.P.D. was the only Disney-made season of the franchise where all of the core five actors are all North American.
- Disney wanted to save money and didn't want to hire a seventh starring actor, so it was written in that Sam the Omega Ranger, as a side effect of time traveling, was either stuck in his suit or transformed into a ball of light. This meant he was played on set by a stuntman in a bulky helmet and had his dialogue recorded later in ADR.
