Ressha Sentai ToQger is the 38th season of the Super Sentai franchise, it ran from February 16th, 2014 - February 15th, 2015; a day after Valentine's 2015. It succeeded Zyuden Sentai Kyōryūger and preceded Shuriken Sentai Ninninger, a flawed and a terrible Super Sentai season. This was the first post-Jetman Super Sentai show that did not get a direct Power Rangers adaptation due to the fact that there was no way to make the series culturally relevant for American audiences without extensive reshoots to replace the Japanese trains with American trains (that and railfanning is more of a niche hobby in the United States, while it's an entire sub-culture in Japan).

Plot

Five kids travel on the Rainbow Line, but they have several problems: they'll often arrive at a station only to find if it has been taken over by the Shadow Line, they can't remember anything beyond their childhood memories, and there are lost trains that need to be found.

Bad Qualities

  1. All of the rangers (Except Mio/ToQ 3gou, Hikari/ToQ 4gou and Akira Nijino/ToQ 6gou) are very annoying and childish throughout the series, especially Tokatti/ToQ 2gou (Blue Ranger) and Kagura/ToQ 5gou. (Pink Ranger)
    • In fact, the main five ToQgers are kids, and annoying ones at that, while Akira was originally a shadow monster known as Zaram, hence the only reason why Akira isn't a kid.
    • Speaking of which, the core rangers all being kids pretty much shares the same problem as Justin from Power Rangers Turbo and Kou/KibaRanger (White Ranger) from Gosei Sentai Dairanger, as both decisions were unnecessary and were just a poor attempt at pandering towards the younger audience.
  2. There was once an infamous scene where ToQ-Oh pulled the red ressha (train) out of its chest just to get out of a coffin on the 3rd Episode, resembling a genital. (Station 3: Desperate Once Convinced)
  3. Some of the Monsters in every episode was completely mediocre and unlikable.
  4. The humor could be sometimes unlikeable and stupid.
  5. Dumb plots such as:
    • In Episode 5, Bucket Shadow starts to collect darkness by making people feeling starve and hungry from eating every scrap of food from them, Similar to Episode 8 of Zyuranger.
    • In Episode 20, Jack-in-the-Box Shadow's ability to send people flying away from him if they laugh affects all the ToQgers (except Akira)
    • Whenever comes to movies, Their Team-Up with Kyoryuger and Ninninger was really underwhelming and rushed.
      • In Kyoryuger, there is a disturbing scene where Utsusemimaru/Kyoryu Gold became a baby just because he saw the clock monster longer than the main ToQgers.
      • In Ninninger, the ToQgers attacked the Shadow Line in disturbing ways.
      • Kagura/ToQ 5gou (Pink Ranger) attacked Baron Nero by bumping him with her butt.
      • Tokatti/ToQ 2gou (Blue Ranger) and Mio/ToQ 3gou (Yellow Ranger) shot Madame Noir right in the breasts.
  6. This season had little amounts of Dark Moments and a lot of Light-Hearted Moments. Even Mirai Sentai Timeranger, Tokusou Sentai Dekaranger, GoGo Sentai Boukenger and Tokumei Sentai Go-Busters had a lot of Darker moments and much fewer Light-hearted moments compared to this season.
  7. It's a rehash and rip-off of Kamen Rider Den-O, despite the fact both of the shows are written by the same writer, namely Yasuko Kobayashi.
  8. Unnecessary episodes, including episodes 14, 28, 34, 38, and the infamous episode 26.
  9. Conductor, the mentor becomes ToQ 7gou (Purple Ranger) for nothing in their return film Ressha Sentai ToQger Returns: Super 7gou of Dreams and appears out of nowhere as ToQ 7gou.
  10. Wagon is a very annoying assistant, alongside most of the main five ToQgers themselves.
  11. The mentor character is a conductor with an ambiguously sentient monkey puppet.
  12. And finally, let's pour some alcohol on a wound, this show aired concurrently with the terrible Power Rangers Super Megaforce, the worst excuse for an anniversary of the Power Rangers franchise!
    • Speaking of Power Rangers, this show didn't even get an American adaptation because of the poor toy sales in Japan according to Former Power Rangers showrunner (from Dino Fury and Cosmic Fury) Simon Bennett, the fact that there was no way to make the series culturally relevant for American audiences without extensive reshoots to replace the Japanese trains with American trains, and the fact that railfanning is more of a niche hobby in the United States, while it's an entire sub-culture in Japan, and as merchandise sales play a big role in the Power Rangers franchise it was thought that adapting the season would not have been profitable.

Good Qualities

  1. The theme song and ending song are at least nice to listen to.
  2. The villain group of the show, known as the Shadow Line, are actually threatening villains. The main villain in particular, Z has an unorthodox goal of obtaining light from the Toqgers, unlike most of the Sentai big bads whose goals is to conquer the world/universe.
  3. There are some likable characters such as General Schwarz, Miss Gritta, Baron Nero, Emperor of Darkness Z, Mio/ToQ 3gou (Yellow Ranger), Hikari/ToQ 4gou (Green Ranger), and Akira Nijino/ToQ 6gou (Orange Ranger).
  4. The practical effects are par for the course for the franchise.
  5. Their suit designs are rather decent to look at.
  6. It had a decent crossover with Kamen Rider Gaim.
  7. It airs alongside both shows such as Kamen Rider Gaim and Kamen Rider Drive.
  8. It had some good episodes such as the 17th Episode, 41st Episode, and 42nd episode
  9. This is the only team with Rangers who can switch their suit color along with their signature weapons, through sharing their respective gimmicks to each other (Aka Transfer Changes).
  10. This season is arguably more tolerable than Shuriken Sentai Ninninger and Kishiryu Sentai Ryusoulger.
  11. Some fans of the Super Sentai Series may enjoy it.
  12. The finale was a good way to end this season.

Trivia

  1. Despite unable to receive a full-series adaptation for Power Rangers, some of the elements were carried to a few seasons:
    1. In Ninja Steel/Super Ninja Steel, Baron Nero's costume was used for an exclusive villain called Cosmo Royale, albeit with a new head.
    2. In Dino Fury, Madame Noir's costume was used for Void Queen/Santaura's monster form, yet her costume wasn't retooled unlike Nero's.
    3. A Kuliner Robo costume was used for a background character in Power Rangers Super Ninja Steel.
  2. Right/ToQ 1gou and Akira Nijino makes a return in the 32th episode (Bakuage 32: Hell's Playing Train) of Bakuage Sentai Boonboomger, the currently airing season with the respective actors reprising their roles, which was to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of the show's airing.
