SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis is a 2007 video game based on the Nickelodeon animated television series SpongeBob SquarePants, specifically the Atlantis SquarePantis TV movie even though it came out about a month after the game was released. The Wii and PlayStation 2 versions were developed by Blitz Games. The Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS versions were developed by Altron.
Plot
Consoles/GBA versions
The game begins with SpongeBob and his friends escaping from Atlantis. Meanwhile, Plankton rampages around Atlantis with a tank he "borrowed" until he comes across the gang. SpongeBob and Patrick begin to remember how they got into this mess
Nintendo DS version
At the beginning of the game, SpongeBob and Patrick are blowing bubbles. They blow one that is too large, and they get trapped inside it, taking them to a cave. In the cave, they discover parts of the Atlantean Amulet. After finding all ten pieces, the cave begins to collapse, and they must escape. After leaving the cave, the two go to have to save Bikini Bottom from an army of Ghost jellyfish and show the Amulet to Squidward at the museum. He realizes that by finding the Amulet, they can go to Atlantis.
Why It Can Go to Atlantis
Consoles
- The gameplay stands out from most of the other SpongeBob games released over the years (except for Lights, Camera, Pants!) and especially stands out from the other games released in the 2000s era, and while this game's gameplay isn't as great as most other SpongeBob games on the PS2 or the Wii, it's still good enough and can be fun.
- Good soundtrack that is very catchy, much like the show's soundtrack.
- Decent controls that are very tight and responsive, and will never be unresponsive, although they had some missed oportunities (see BQ#1).
- Good voice acting that sound like the show, all of the characters voices actors reprised their roles (except for Mr. Krabs, who only makes grunts and screams), and sound just as good as they were in the show, same for the other dubs, including the French dub that is excellent as usual.
- Great graphics that still hold up, and while it isn't as good as the other games such as SpongeBob Movie game, SpongeBob SquarePants: Creature from the Krusty Krab, or even Battle for Bikini Bottom, it still looks great for its time due to being colorful and the art style being faithful to the show.
- It is a done right version of the special episode of the same name, due to having a similar but better story, and also because it is a decent game overall.
- It can be a good way to make people starting playing video games due to this game being easy and because of not being hard to understand.
- Most of the levels are very unique and are different from each other, as well as including other genres, such as rail shooter in one of the world.
- Good looking maps.
- It is a decent way to end the PS2 era of the SpongeBob SquarePants video games, and would be a good way to start the new era of the SpongeBob games with the Wii version, as the Wii itself was new at the time.
Game Boy Advance
- Fun gameplay, like the other versions but here it is even better than the console versions despite mostly being a regular 2D platformer without something new, but it can be fun because of the tight controls, and because of the challenging difficulty in comparison to the console version, even if the DS version is harder.
- Great graphics, while they are somewhat weaker compared to The Movie game or Creature from the Krusty Krab, they still look good with great sprite work and being colorful, it also surprisingly for a late GBA game.
- Tight controls, even though they are a little unresponsive.
- Great soundtrack that while it is reused from the DS version, it is actually kind of impressive that it is extremely similar, despite that this might be because of the DS version having soundtrack that ressemble a GBA game.
- The level design is pretty good, due to having some unique levels that are better than most SpongeBob games on the GBA, except the Game Boy Advance version of The SpongeBob Movie of course.
- Great bosses that are pretty challenging and are even better than in most SpongeBob games on the GBA, due to them being unique and because of the fact that they are fun and had paths that is not hard nor too easy to learn.
- It is faithful to the show and especially the episode that this game is based on.
- The characters are likable and are hilarous, much like the show, and are arguably more likable than in the special.
- The mini games are really fun, and some of them are hilarous, especially the rythme mini game that is very fun and is funny.
Nintendo DS
- Good controls, despite being a little stiff, the game is built around it, and the controls aren't unresponsive, so it will not make you having trouble playing this game, thanks to how good the controls are.
- Great soundtrack, due to being the same music of the GBA version, bit it's slightly more hd.
- This is one of the few 3D platformers on the DS to be designed for the DS in mind, making it one of the best 3D platformers on the console, compared to other terrible 3D platformers that wasn't designed for the DS.
- Great boss fights, much like the other versions.
- It is definitely more challenging than the other versions, even more challenging than the GBA port, as the difficulty is quite hard but well balanced because it still feel fair and is neither too hard nor too easy, especially when compared to Battle for Bikini Bottom on the GBA that was good but frustratingly difficult in some of it's levels.
- Fun gameplay.
- The graphics, despite BQ#1, are pretty decent for a 2007 DS game, and is much better than most SpongeBob DS games graphics.
- The puzzles are very interesting.
Bad Qualities
Consoles
- The game, for the most part, is way too easy, since whenever you die, you simply go back to the previous checkpoint and there's isn't any lives system, though it might have been intentional, since the game is mostly a die and retry/trial-and-error type of game.
- It had some missed oportunities, such as having some platforming stages, or a jump button, which would made the game even better and also even more fun.
- Much like other versions of the game, it is very short, lasting only 2 to 3 hours.
- The gameplay, while good, is repetitive, as you mostly doing the same type of levels, although it is still fun due to the levels being different from each other's.
Game Boy Advance
- The controls can be slightly unresponsive, which can lead to cheap deaths, this is especially noticeable with the jump, though they still are tight and responsive for the most parts.
- The game at times can be frustrating and had difficulty spike, although not as much as the DS version.
- It is pretty short, lasting only 2 hours, and it doesn't help that there's no replay values at all.
- The game had a lot of backtracking, and while there are backtracking in the DS version, it's even worst here due to the levels being more huge, howewer it isn't as bad as in Revenge of the Flying Dutchman for the GBA.
Nintendo DS
- While decent for their time, the graphics didn't aged well, because of the characters models that are pretty blocky, and because of the oversatured colors used in it, but howewer it still look good and not as awful as the DS version of Truth or Square.
- The game had backtracking, although it isn't as bad as in the GBA version.
- The game, like the other versions, is quite short, lasting only 4 hours, although it is a little longer than the other versions.
- Some frustrating levels, either due to the puzzles or because of the enemies placements that is sometime poor, even though it isn't nearly as horrible as in Truth or Square for the DS.
- The Mu Temple level is the most stupid, random and inaccurate level to the special itself.
Reception
SpongeBob's Atlantis SquarePantis received mixed reviews by critics, the graphics and variety were praised but the repetitive nature of the game and the controls were criticized, the controls we're mostly criticized because of not having a jump button.
The game got a score of 66%, 72%, 60% and 62% for the DS, GBA, PS2 and Wii version on Gameranking respectively.
On Metacritic, only the DS version got a score, which was 64/100.

- The Nintendo DS version was also released as part of a bundle with a SpongeBob Nintendo DS Lite/Nintendo DSi case.
- Just like in Creature from the Krusty Krab, the internal development team behind the game, Team RocFISH, hid their mascot throughout multiple levels. The levels in which RocFISH can be found are:

- Snap Happy! - At the end of the level, RocFish appears outside of the museum.
- Music Magical Journey! - He appear outside of the bus.

- According to SpongeBob in the "Amulet Adventure!" level, before this game, Patrick has had haunted bread products at least once.
- In the "Amulet Adventure!" level, it foreshadows SpongeBob and Patrick finding the amulet twice. The first time is when SpongeBob wonders if there is a treasure in the cave and the second time is when the Ghostly Pirates mention that there is a treasure in the cave.
- SpongeBob almost breaks the fourth wall three times. Once in "Snap Happy!," when he wishes that he could continue to take pictures by wishing that this adventure was a game. Once in "Tour Trouble!" during the Science Room section, SpongeBob says, "It's like being inside a TV." Once in the SpongeBob's Director's Commentary for "Money Krabbing!" when he mentions that he should have his own TV show, but then thinks that would not be a good idea. He says, "Nah - who'd want to watch a show called 'SpongeBob SquarePants'?"
