Boule & Bill (English: Billy and Buddy) is a 52-episode 3D animated television series created by Philippe Vidal and broadcast on France 3, in the Ludo show, since January 23, 2016. It follows the 2005 animated television series.

Plot

The continuation of the adventures of Boule and her dog Bill, a gluttonous cocker spaniel, always in the company of Caroline, the turtle.

Why It Sucks

  1. To get the elephant out of the room: much like Thomas & Friends: All Engines Go, the CGI era of Fireman Sam, the 2021 reboot of Tara Duncan, Noddy: Toyland Detective, Foot 2 Rue Extrême and the 2015 reboot of Bob the Builder, the idea to restart the series (although it's not the worst idea ever) was utterly useless because not only the 2005 series was not so old at the time of its release but especially the license was already ruined because of the 2013 film which seriously damaged the image of comics.
  2. Truly terrible understanding of the source material: Similar to other bad shows like Les Légendaires, Trolls de Troy, Titeuf (Season 4), Lanfeust Quest, Les Sisters, Les p'tits Diables, Tara Duncan and is 2021 reboot and Le monde selon Kev the series is highly unfaithful to the book in which it is adapted.
  3. The CGI animation of this series is a disaster for something released in 2016 (1 year after Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir for comparison) it's stuffy and robotic and is even worse than the CGI era of Fireman Sam , the 2015 reboot of Bob the Builder, the 2021 reboot of Tara Duncan, Spy Kids Mission Critical, Alvinnn!!! and the Chipmunks, Fanboy & Chumchum, Planet Sheen, Foot 2 Rue Extrême, LEGO Nexo Knights, Fleabag Monkeyface, Spirit: Riding Free, season 4 of Angelo Rules, Pat the Dog, Power Players, Grizzy & the Lemmings, Rainbow Rangers, Cry Babies Magic Tears, Les Légendaires, Pac Man and the Ghostly Adventures, the 2018 reboot of Denver the last Dinosaur, Monsters vs Aliens, My Knight and Me, Arthur and the Minimoys and The Chicken Squad.
  4. The series has almost no resemblance to the series of 2005 and even less to that of 1975 it resembles more the film of 2013 like Alvin and the Chipmunks.
  5. Much like Teen Titans Go!, Bob the Builder (2015), Fireman Sam since Season 6, Postman Pat: Special Delivery Service, Monster High (2016), The Powerpuff Girls (2016), Inspector Gadget (2015), Les Minikeums (2017), Caillou's New Adventures, Noddy, Toyland Detective, Les Légendaires and Thomas & Friends: Big World! Big Adventures! & All Engines Go, The show tries way too much to modernize the characters and because of that they look nothing like their comic book counterparts.
  6. Abysmal and horrible writing with completely uninteresting episodes that often tend to jump the shark.
  7. Generic and flat theme song is nothing more than a whistle on a piece of music.
  8. The characters are bland and generic and also without any personality.
  9. Quantity over Quality: Despite its flaws, it was enough to continue being broadcast with a second season and 104 episodes.
  10. In a similar manner to how The Powerpuff Girls (2016), Shrek the Third, Cars 2, Lightyear, Minions, The Jungle Brunch: The Movie, Les Légendaires, Seuls and Ren & Stimpy "Adult Party Cartoon" negatively affected their respective franchises, this cartoon, as well as the two live action films have all three seriously harmed the image of Boule & Bill.

Redeeming Qualities

  1. At least unlike the majority of horrific comic book adaptations, the characters haven't been severely flanderized.
  2. The French dubbing is always excellent.

Reception

Although it had a 6.4/10 on IMDb, the series was universally criticized by fans of the book, the series holds a 3.2/10 on Senscritique.

Trivia

Unlike the 2005 animated series, Boule wears overalls in this series, a reference to the 1975 animated series and the original Boule.
