Titeuf is a French-Swiss animated television series, adapted from the eponymous Swiss comic strip by Zep, broadcast from April 7, 2001, to October 3, 2017, on Canal J and France 3.
After the first season in 2001 of 78 episodes, a second season was broadcast in 2005. The third is broadcast on August 27, 2008, in France 3. A fourth season is broadcast on France 3 from February 13, 2016, to October 30, 2017.
Plot
The series tells the daily life of Titeuf, a ten-year-old boy with a characteristic blond lock, his friends, and their vision of the adult world. A large part of the discussions evokes the mysteries of girls, life, of seduction, and of Nadia, the girl with whom Titeuf is in love. Another characteristic of Titeuf are his many expressions (such as “Tchô!” and “C'est pô juste!”).
Why It's No Cool Anymore
- Poor mastery of source material: Similar to Les Légendaires, Trolls de Troy, Lanfeust Quest, Les Sisters, Les P'tits Diables, and the 2016 reboot of Boule et Bill this season is unfaithful to the comics because it had a lot of changes, unlike the first 3 seasons.
- Also, just to get the elephant out of the room: Similar to Street Football season 4, A Kind of Magic season 2, Corneil & Bernie season 2 and Les Minijusticiers season 3 which are also bad seasons it came out much too late to be considered a season. because here we are talking about a period of 8 years, even if the season 3 ended in 2011.
- In fact due to how different it is from the other seasons and the fact that it came out 8 years later, if it was released as a reboot, no ones would even notice the differences.
- Moreover, this season is a victim of executive meddling because instead of continuing where season 3 left off, they decided to change everything in order to get closer to comics, but it didn't work to the point that it stay unfaithful to comics.
- In fact it changed so much that it was close to feel like a completely different show than the first three seasons, although fortunately it still feel like Titeuf.
- The flash animation has become blander and less beautiful than the first 3 seasons, the art style is also a bit of a downgrade from the first three seasons.
- To make matter worse, the animation is quite stiff, and move in a robotic way for almost all the episodes, which also look uncanny and it doesn't help that the art style isn't as detailled and as great as the previous seasons too.
- A lot of imagination scenes are poorly animated too, and while a lot of them are better animated than the actual episodes, there's some of those who are very poorly animated due to being less colorful and detailled, and also move in a stiff way.
- And it's inexcusable because it's the same studio that animated the good cartoon Lou!, which came out in 2009, 7 years before this season 4 from Titeuf.
- Not to mention that the animation quality is inconsistent in this season, even more than the first three, since there's episodes where it is bad (for most of them), and some other where it is great (such as in the episode "Ramatou", not to be comfused with the character of the same name).
- Unlike the credits of seasons 1 and 3, that of season 4 is less striking and this isn't helped by the fact that it feel very generic, unlike the first three seasons that had fun credits sequences.
- It also last only 4 seconds, which show how generic they are in comparison to the original show, and also they aren't even entairtaining.
- They feel more like credits for a generic 2017 French show, instead of feeling like it come from the Titeuf franchise.
- Also, instead of showing clips from the episodes like in season 1, they decided to only make a scene where Titeuf watch both Nadia and Ramatou talking to each other, with a relaxing music but still a generic sounding one.
- There are far too many changes which makes it clear that this season 4 is more of a reboot than a new season, this is proved by:
- The different art style that while faithful to the original, is a downgrade and look way too much like a modern 2D flash show, and it doesn't even feel like Titeuf, in comparison to the original first three seasons.
- The fact that it only take place in school and in Titeuf house for the most parts, even though this is nothing but still, the first three seasons had more varied environnements, even if there's still a decent amount of them.
- Another reason is because of the new characters such as Thérèse that appear way too much and sometime are a main role of an episode, even if some new characters like Ramatou and Maxime being good characters.
- It doesn't help that most of the episodes plots are less varied, which is the main problem of the environnements variation being pretty mediocre in comparison to the older seasons.
- Vomito barely appear and doesn't had any lines except in one occasion, when in the original he got a major role in many episodes, here there's not a single episode that had him as a main character.
- Some of the characters have been removed for no apparent reason or are little or not used.
- Vomito has only had one line all season when he was one of the franchise's most iconic characters, not to mention that when he is seen, he is mostly a background character now, when in the previous seasons, he had a major roles in some episodes such as in "Train Madness" from season 1, howewer this season doesn't even had him in one plot.
- Ray'Charles (The Highly Shortsighted) was only seen in one episode as stated before.
- Tim was unfairly removed from this season to be replaced by Romuald, an unfriendly Gary-Stu.
- The nurse changed her appearance for no apparent reason, from an extremely beautiful woman to a fat, ugly old woman that is also a huge downgrade from the nurse of the previous seasons, not only in term of design but also personality, while she is likable for the most parts, she doesn't had the same charm as the previous one.
- Ze t'aime hasn't even appeared on the show anymore and no one has an explanation, and she isn't even mentionned one time in this season, not even by Titeuf himself.
- Some characters have been heavily flanderized to the point of being beyond recognition, and also give some of the worst characters from a French cartoon, exemples include:
- Titeuf went from a nice kid wanting to understand the adult world to a huge butt-monkey that is somehow even worse than Lincoln Loud who gets treated unfairly and always gets punished like the writers hates him and wants to express their hate on him unjustly.
- And when he's unlikable, he is a jerk and done some of the worst things of the entire series, such as horribly gross stuffs or sometime he even mock persons, in which he didn't do it in the previous seasons.
- In fact, some of the things he did would never even been in the first three seasons at all, such as in one episode when Malcom (who did appear only one time by the way) talked in english and that the girls didn't understand what he said, he say things that aren't even true, but the worst part about it is that he said that he did said that Nadia looked luke the mistress, in which Malcom did get slap for no reasons other than Titeuf terrible behavior.
- And when he's unlikable, he is a jerk and done some of the worst things of the entire series, such as horribly gross stuffs or sometime he even mock persons, in which he didn't do it in the previous seasons.
- Nadia (worst of all) has gone from a sweet but a bit naughty young girl who only slaps Titeuf if he goes too far to being a mean popular girl who doesn't care about treating Titeuf unfairly and always make fun of him, as well as making fun of some friends of Titeuf such as Hugo in one episode. She is without a doubt the worst character in the series along with Dumbo.
- She's also a huge hypocrite because when Titeuf make compliments to her, she don't want to be with him, and when he leave her in "The Penis Polygame", she goes angry and even does everything to render Titeuf jealous by trying to being in couple with Manu, when Dumbo was Manu crush for a long time, and this of course worked.
- The absolute worst thing about this episode event is that in a fait amount of episodes after that one, she still reject Titeuf, when she was angry that he left him, what kind of bullshits is this ?!
- Dumbo (much like Nadia) had gone from a kid-hearted girl who only make fun of Titeuf when he's doing bad things to a mean popular girl that is unlovable and always make fun of Titeuf and his friends, she also had almost no personality and is overall one of the worst character in the series along with Thérèse.
- Nathalie has gone from an endearing tomboy to an unlovable mean girl who has no personality and is there just for the sake of being another friend to Nadia and Dumbo, in fact you could remove her from this season and no one would even notice the difference.
- Titeuf's father has gone from a caring father to an ultra-depressed man who no longer has any personality, at least in most episodes.
- Speaking about Titeuf father, his parents had almost no impact in this season and are just secondary characters, when in the first season and to a lesser extend, season 2-3, they we're major characters that we're important, here they aren't because they don't appear in almost every episodes.
- Titeuf went from a nice kid wanting to understand the adult world to a huge butt-monkey that is somehow even worse than Lincoln Loud who gets treated unfairly and always gets punished like the writers hates him and wants to express their hate on him unjustly.
- Some new characters are not endearing like Therese or Romuald, and are just here to try to make the show being modern but it fail, and the new characters are mostly bad, expect Ramatou though.
- Thérèse is easily the second worst character in the series because not only she's dumb but also some of the worst episode events happen because of her, most notably in "I Lost My Grandpa" where she did got Titeuf in huge trouble because she didn't understand what Titeuf wanted to say and because of that, they didn't talked to Titeuf anymore before the end of the episode.
- In fact she is so stupid that in one episode, when Titeuf swim, she though that there was a shark because of Titeuf bonnet, which make you wonder how stupid a person can be, even if she's 10 years old (probably).
- Romuald is an annoying character with little to no personality beside of being a gary sue, and is mostly there to make this season feel new, also it doesn't help that he don't had that much roles in most episodes either.
- It take every problems of the season 3 that was when the show started to decline a bit in quality and made them worse, such as flanderized characters, boring plots and of course the very mean spirited moments.
- This even count the episodes number, since they did 75 episodes in just one years and a half, when the season 3 did 158 episodes in 3 years, although it isn't as bad here.
- This explain why Nadia is very mean to Titeuf since she started to be mean to him in that season but even then it wasn't all the time and was still a decent character even if her season 1 counterpart was better, howewer in this season they turned her mean behavior to 11.
- It's abuses toilet humor even more than before, especially with the episode The Penis Chip, and the toilet humor is even worse and is extremely disgusting.
- Not to mention that it also had incredibly innapropriate humors, even compared to the previous seasons, such exemples include penis puns or an entire episode that is focused on girls toilet (Water Causette), and those are more gross than funny.
- Also, some of the mean-spirited moments are actually supposed to be made for laughs, such as "I Lost My Grandpa" but it rather feel unfunny, horrible and cruel than funny.
- Same goes for another episode titled "The Kissing Disease", in which Titeuf litteraly want to get sick just to prove that he did kiss Manu sister, when he could have just explained how it gone, even though when he said it, hid friends didn't trust him but even then, you don't had to do this in order to prove anything.
- In fact in this episode Nadia and Dumbo think that he was gross, and while for the most parts they are unlikable, here they we're right to slap him because he touch the glanders that Max did accidently throw at Nadia, and here she was right to slap him and it mean something considering that she did this for no reasons for the most parts, no seriously how can they do such horrible humors ?
- Same goes for another episode titled "The Kissing Disease", in which Titeuf litteraly want to get sick just to prove that he did kiss Manu sister, when he could have just explained how it gone, even though when he said it, hid friends didn't trust him but even then, you don't had to do this in order to prove anything.
- In conclusion, while this season can be funny, the humor is just bad and is way worse than the previous three seasons.
- The episodes are incredibly boring to watch for the most parts because of the writting not being as good as the original seasons, and because the episodes plots are pretty repetitive.
- The title cards are terrible and feel like they we're drawn by 4 years old kids, who are terrible at drawing, and it doesn't help that most of them are just ugly to look at and are sometime misleading.
- It's has a lot of petty and mean spirited scenes towards Titeuf, especially when it come to Nadia and Dumbo since they always make fun of him.
- In fact, almost all episodes had horribly mean-spirited moments that are incredibly cruel and are almost unwatchable at times, such as in "I Lost My Grandpa" where those moments are cranked up to eleven, this was also the reason of why there's so many terrible episodes.
- Some of the other characters such as Manu also get some torture for no reasons, especially when it come from Titeuf being a jerk.
- The writting in this season is absolute garbage, since not only most of the episodes bad but also, the show lack the charm of the previous seasons and is mostly in school rather than out of the school for the most parts, also the writting had become more mean-spirited, boring and just overall poorly made and it doesn't had the exact same feel as the previous seasons, especially that of season 1.
- Also this explain why most of the episodes are very boring to watch and sometime are even hard to watch because of the torture the main characters get, it is howewer not as bad as other atrocious French shows such as Sweet Little Monsters (Les p'tits diables).
- Some of the characters got redesigned, and while some of them look decent (Titeuf and Nadia for exemple), some of those are just terrible, same goes for some new characters, such as:
- Titeuf, while he had a decent design, it isn't as good as in the first three because he's less detailled and his expressions are more downgraded now, although he doesn't had the worst redesign of the season.
- Dumbo easily had the worst redesign of the season, since her air are now completely detached (while it was the case in season 1-3, it wasn't that terrible), and her expressions are way worse, also due to the less detailled style, she's overall look worst than her season 1-3 incarnations, although it was probably intentionnal.
- Thérèse had a very bad redesign from her movie counterpart, which looked a bit better, here her face expressions are just uncanny and ugly to look at, and overall, she had one of the worst design of the entire series.
- Romuald, while his design isn't terrible, some of his expressions are uncanny as well.
- Moreover, as for other adaptations of comics, it tends to take a gag from the comics and adapt it into the cartoon, but not in a good way and instead those gags are just plain horrendous to watch because of either being gross or annoying.
- And this is incredibly sad when you think about it because the original show was very funny and adapted the gags into a show really well, here howewer it isn't the case and this is even to the point of having almost no good episodes at all, yep this season is that bad.
- The show tends to jump the shark especially in the 5th episode which literally shows Titeuf who invents a lie about domestic violence.
- There's also has a lot of bad episodes to the point of almost having little to no good episodes in a similar manner to Zig & Sharko season 4, these include but not limited to:
- Thérèse (A bad way to start the season)
- The Drawing Class (Who gives a horrible message about domestic violence)
- Environmentalists
- Prince and Princess
- Sick at All Costs
- Doggy Sitter
- The Kissing Disease (Probably the most gross episode of not only this show, but also one of the absolute worst exemple of gross out humor ever made and is even worse than even some gross humors of Ren & Stimpy)
- Sex Education Class
- The Polygamous Penis (One of the most notable examples of Nadia's hypocrisy)
- The Exposition of Hell
- Journey inside the inside... of a girl
- The stench of living mold
- Operation Turboprout
- Spring Snow
- Allergik
- Super Secret Identity
- Counterfeit Money
- "Water Chat"
- Bad Reputation (One of the worst episode of the series)
- The Penis Chip (One of the most notable examples of toilet humor)
- I Lost My Grandpa (Probably the worst episode of the series)
- Hell's Toilet
- The Pesticle Squeaker
- The Return of the Cursed Underpants (A very bad sequel to an episode from a previous season)
- Biceps Doping
- My Good Star
- The Cast of Love
- Many continuity errors such as when Therese arrives in the class as a new student Ramatou was there and in the last episode when Ramatou arrives as a new student Therese is already there.
- Some French dubbings are awful, especially that of Nathalie or Thérese who give the impression that they have been dubbed by a man suffering from puberty.
- The soundtrack is incredibly bland and not as great as the first three seasons which had great and less generic soundtrack, especially because it doesn't even had the same feel anymore and instead feel more like it come from a generic French show rather than Titeuf.
- All in all, it's a huge example of seasonal rot.
Redeeming Qualities
- It's still just as funny despite the toilet humor, although not as much as the first three seasons.
- Some old characters remain likable like Manu, Titeuf (despite being less likable than before) or Hugo.
- Better yet: Jean Claude has flanderized in a good way because he has become more sympathetic than before, and is funnier than in the previous seasons.
- There are good episodes like:
- The Petunia of Death (A funny episode even if it isn't so great)
- The Doers of Justice
- Ramatou (Which is one of the best episode of the season and one of the few that don't had any mean-spirited moments)
- The Big Departure (Despite the characters being at their absolute worst, it is one of the funniest episode of the whole season)
- Karatéteuf (Probably the best episode of this season)
- Operation Hedgehog
- My Mega Lucky Star (Which is still the sequel to the previous episode which was bad)
- Night of the Weredog (Who ended the series on a high note)
- The French dubbing remains decent with Donald Reignoux who does an excellent job dubbing Titeuf and Hugo, even if Titeuf voice isn't as good as the previous seasons.
- In addition, some new characters are ultra-friendly like Ramatou who makes an excellent couple with Titeuf unlike the Titeuf/Nadia couple.
- Despite the animation being a downgrade from the previous three seasons, the art style is not bad and pretty colorful, despite being less detailled.
- And to be honest, some characters designs are still good, such as Titeuf, Hugo and François, and some of the redesign are also even better such as for Nadia.
- The opening is somewhat good and catchy to listen to, despite being a downgrade from the first three seasons, although it is incredibly generic.
Reception
Unlike the first three seasons, the season 4 was panned by fans, they criticized the animation, flanderized characters, toilet humor and the fact that most episodes are terrible.
In fact it was also considered to be the worst season of the show and some peoples on Senscritique even said that they gave a lower score for the series because of this season being bad.
Trivia
- Unlike the first three seasons, this season didn't get an english dub, probably due to the long hiatus between Season 3 and 4.
- Despite being panned, the season is extremely popular and is still well know to this day, and even got some memes such as when Titeuf leave Nadia in "The Penis Polygame".
